It will be here before you know it — April 19-20, at the New York Marriott Downtown, in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District. If you’re wondering what to do next, here are two key volunteer needs to help us prepare. And they’re fun and easy!
- Host a lunch on Sunday, April 19. All you have to do is come up with a theme (science writing, memoir, food writing, etc.) and email associate conference chair Kristine Hansen. Attendees sign up for your lunch on a Google sheet, pay for their own meal, and we can even help you find a nearby place.
- Invite editors and literary agents to meet with attendee writers (via short speed-dating-like appointments created on a lottery system) on the afternoon of Monday, April 20. Client Connections co-chairs Jeanette Hurt and Erin O'Donnell have already created an invite ... all you need to do is hit "send!" We've found that the best editors and agents to participate in this event are already familiar with our membership.
Questions? Contact 2020 conference chair Randy Dotinga or associate conference chair Kristine Hansen. How can we make this conference the best yet and better serve your needs? Don't hesitate to let us know!

The Client Connections team is hard at work inviting top editors and agents to the second day of the ASJA conference, April 20. The line-up is starting to look really GOOD, and so far, it includes two editors from Cosmopolitan, as well as editors from Quanta Magazine, Cancer Today, Fatherly, Bustle, IEEE Spectrum, and Bergdorf Goodman. Other “yesses” include the following content marketing agencies: Masthead Media, Contently, and Original 9 Media. There’s a slew of great literary agents coming too, with more clients registering daily. Don’t miss out. Early bird registration for the conference ends today!

Self-publishing expert David Gaughran has recently been discussing the power of email for writers through a series of — what else? — emails.
I reached out to ask him for a few of the reasons why email is so useful to writers in particular, and what tips he can offer to writers hoping to build their own email newsletter audiences.

Looking for work is an integral part of freelance writing, something that should be part of your daily routine. If you’re not pitching and following up with those pitches, you won’t last long. The follow-up pitch is the more pernicious of the two because you’ve already invested time in constructing a pitch and now, hold up, you have to go back?

When meeting someone for the first time, people often ask, "What do you do for a living?" The question implies what work one performs is one of the most essential aspects of a person's identity. But how would one answer if forced to leave their chosen field? A University of Kansas professor conducted one of the first studies to explore how journalists view the media landscape and their sense of identity once they left the profession.

Accountability journalism is fueled by access to public records, documents, and data — stories like how a state government relies on secretive software to do most of its work, or how government agencies overcite terrorism as a reason to withhold records. Public records can even, in some places, tell us how local officials spend their time on the internet during the workday.
