Our team of judges is almost completed, but we still need about 20 more! Can you give us 3-5 (very enjoyable) hours? Besides reading some truly terrific entries, judging is a great way to get to know other members. And you get to talk about writing! (If you're entering an article or book yourself, that's fine. We can work around that.) We'll be judging during the latter part of February and the first couple of weeks in March. New members welcome! Volunteers taken, first-come.

What’s the best thing you wrote last year? You can enter for an ASJA Writing Award award through Feb. 7 at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. We have several NEW CATEGORIES: Travel, Fitness & Sports, Food & Drink, Reported Essay (your take plus the evidence you researched). Also, Profiles is new as a stand-alone award, as is Business & Marketing. This is the year to apply for The June Roth Book Award (medical writing) for a book published in 2016, 2017 or 2018. Look over the categories, then apply.

Dates have been set for the next Virtual Client Connections where you can meet editors and agents and find new markets. This virtual event will be held Feb. 26-March 1, with sign-ups on ASJA's website beginning at 2 p.m. EST on Feb. 12. Stay tuned to the forums, ASJA Weekly and the Client Connections page on ASJA's website for news of participating editors/agents.
Not sure if this is right for you? Many of our members have been successful finding new markets through VCC, which is offered several times a year, and through which members are connected with editors and agents by phone or Skype.
Virtual Client Connection Chair Kristine Hansen and her team of volunteers are sending out invites now to editors/agents and welcome your suggestions. Is there a market you're dying to break into or an editor you know is freelancer-friendly? Or maybe you'd like to volunteer to help send out invites or serve as a host to our editors/agents during VCC? Email Kristine at kristinehansenwriter@gmail.com.

The government shutdown is affecting everyone. For writers attending the ASJA’s annual New York conference in May who expect to miss the deadline for early discount registration bargains because of the shutdown’s financial impact, take heart. We understand the hardship, we want to see you in New York and we can help. Writers who notify ASJA of their intent to attend the conference will receive a temporary deferment of the registration fee and will be able to register later for the same fee in effect at the time of notification.
For example, the Extra Early Bird, two-day rate ($399 for members, $439 for non-members) ends on Jan. 31. Writers affected by the shutdown who want to attend the conference can notify the ASJA office by emailing asjaoffice@asja.org before the Jan. 31 deadline and “reserve” the Extra Early Bird price until later, when the shutdown finally ends. If the shutdown continues beyond Jan. 31, and we all hope that it’s resolved before then, the same deferment will be available for Early Bird registrations (Feb. 1-March 20).
The main stipulation is that writers who take advantage of the deferment are required to pay the applicable registration fee in advance of the conference, not later than April 5. Conference dates are May 5-6.

Too few of us, myself included, take or even have the time to pursue our writing bliss, a genre that may be totally unrelated to what helps pay the bills and keeps the bylines coming. Speaking for myself again, while I’ve been able to get a few passion projects done on my off hours, it’s required an intensive amount of discipline and planning because no money changed hands until well after they were completed. But what if we could pursue that crazy, off-the-wall idea that we’ve been dreaming about for years and make money doing it or at least break even?
ASJA member Elizabeth “Beth” Hanes is doing just that, although it’s been a long journey for her as well. By day, she produces B2B and B2C content for major health and wellness brands. But the mask comes off with “Savannah Says” where she dons the identity of incompetent advice columnist Savannah Lawless, who according to Beth, er, Savannah’s description, is “currently quaffing cooking sherry behind the potted palm in the corner.”

In an effort to gather as much information as possible about how much authors earned in 2017, the Authors Guild conducted its largest income survey ever last summer, reaching beyond the guild’s own members to include 14 other writing and publishing organizations. In all, the survey drew 5,067 responses from authors published by traditional publishers and from hybrid and self-published authors as well.

Do you have a story burning inside, begging to be written, but are afraid of what others will think? I lived through months of self-doubt and the rapid-fire succession of questions beginning with "What if" in the process of writing my memoir, "Broken Whole." By committing to your writing and paying close attention to when your fears feel overwhelming, you can practice ways of moving through them.

Is it possible to force inspiration?
Not really, but a famous science fiction author just gave some advice about being in the right place at the right time to receive it.
For anyone who writes for a living or who aspires to that calling, the advice will seem all-too-familiar. To those who are a little unsure about choosing writing as a profession or are just starting out, it's pure gold as far as how the process works.
