MEMBER-EXCLUSIVE NEWS
Somewhere in my packed bookcase is a tiny little 50-page volume by Anna Quindlen called “A Short Guide to a Happy Life,” which I bought for 67 cents in a used bookstore in Manassas, VA. The part that sticks with me most comes at the end. She writes of interviewing a homeless man on Coney Island and asking him why he stays on the boardwalk in the winter, rather than going to a shelter. “And he stared out at the ocean and said, ‘Look at the view, young lady. Look at the view.’” That means different things on different days. I can go months without remembering it. But when I do it hits me every time. What does it mean to you? What else? Look at the view. What do you see? Warmest wishes, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor

ASJA
With everyone working virtually, it’s easier than ever to invite editors and agents to the ASJA 2021 Tele-Connections event this year. Conference Chair Kristine Hansen reached out to editors she knows and immediately heard back from three who are happy to attend, thanks to the virtual format. Have editors or agents you work with who are looking for more great writers? Let Cheryl Alkon (calkon@gmail.com) know you want to invite them and she’ll send you an official ASJA invite. The Tele-Connections event happens online on May 24-25. The ASJA member who recruits the most editors and agents to this event by April 29 will win either free registration for the full 2021 virtual conference or a slot at either a Tele-Connections or Virtual Pitch Slam session in 2021

Facebook developing a tool to help advertisers avoid bad news
Axios
Facebook is testing new advertiser "topic exclusion controls" to help address concerns marketers may have that their ads are appearing next to topics in Facebook's News Feed that they consider bad for their brand.
Why it matters: As Axios has previously noted, the chaotic nature of the modern news cycle and digital advertising landscape has made it nearly impossible for brands to run ads against quality content in an automated fashion without encountering bad content.

People desperate for COVID-19 guides seek local journalists
The Associated Press
Calling a hospital to see if a bed was available for a COVID-19 patient isn’t part of Houston television news anchor Chauncy Glover’s job description. Neither is guiding a viewer online to find a place to be vaccinated.
He’s done both, and isn’t alone. Listeners and readers across the country are reaching out directly to journalists for help during the coronavirus pandemic, and many are responding.

How to kick-start your freelancing career during the pandemic
Journalism.co.uk
Journalists become freelancers for many number of reasons. Some like the flexibility of being their own boss and setting their own hours, while others want to be sure they can dedicate time to covering stories that matter to them. With ongoing layoffs and newspaper shutdowns reducing the number of staff positions available, freelancing is also becoming an increasingly common fallback plan.

Writing mistakes writers make: Relying on perfect conditions to write
Writer's Digest
Everyone makes mistakes — even writers — but that's OK because each mistake is a great learning opportunity. The Writer's Digest team has witnessed many mistakes over the years, so we started this series to help identify them early in the process. Note: The mistakes in this series aren't focused on grammar rules, though we offer help in that area as well.

Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny and journalism's power to drive protest
Columbia Journalism Review
Last August, Alexei Navalny — the Russian opposition leader and scourge of Vladimir Putin — was poisoned, and fell into a coma. Authorities initially refused to let Navalny leave the country for treatment — in order to hide evidence, his supporters surmised — but friends eventually managed to get him to Germany, where he stayed for months to convalesce. Recently, he made an announcement: He was coming home.

Audience work is more important to journalism than ever
Poynter
Samantha Tomaszewski writes, "I was on a mentoring call with a student about to graduate from college when she shared that she had received some discouraging advice. She had been told not to pursue audience work as a career path.
She was told — by a member of a fairly large journalism organization — that she’d be better off working in a junior reporter role covering a random congressional committee, even if no one read her work."
