If you’re registered for the 2020 ASJA conference in New York City (New York Marriott Downtown, on April 19-20), and wondering what to do next, consider volunteering in one of the following two ways to help us prepare. We promise they are fun and easy!
- Host a lunch on Sunday, April 19. Just come up with a theme (science writing, memoir, food writing, etc.) and email associate conference chair Kristine Hansen. Attendees sign up for your lunch on a Google sheet and pay for their own meal. We can even help you find a nearby place.
- Invite editors and literary agents to meet with attendee writers (via short speed-dating-like appointments created on a lottery system) on the afternoon of Monday, April 20. Client Connections co-chairs Jeanette Hurt and Erin O'Donnell have already created an invite ... all you need to do is hit "send!" We've found that the best editors and agents to participate in this event are already familiar with our membership.
Questions? Contact 2020 conference chair Randy Dotinga or associate conference chair Kristine Hansen. How can we make this conference the best yet and better serve your needs? Don't hesitate to let us know!

Help your fellow writers — and score some major perks for yourself — by entering the Client Connections Recruitment Contest. The ASJA member who recruits the most Client Connections clients can attend one day of the 2020 conference for FREE! To enter, send an email to Cheryl Alkon and let her know which clients — think publications, hospitals, nonprofits, universities, literary agents and content marketing agencies located in the greater New York City area — you can invite to Client Connections, the afternoon of one-on-one, nine-minute meetings to be held Mon., April 20, at the ASJA Annual Conference in New York City. She’ll send you an invite form to forward and track who signs up. The member with the most clients who register wins! Contact Cheryl with any questions.

Many of my writing students share a common complaint: They can’t get past writer’s block. When that feeling of futility strikes (it does for everyone), I reassure them that it’s part of the process and there are many remedies for getting unstuck.
If the muse just won’t manifest, here are a few ways supported by scientific evidence to knock down those blocks so you can build something lasting with your words.

What did you do over summer vacation? When this prompt was assigned to me on the first day of every year of middle school, I resisted the urge to pen fictional tales of walking across hot coals in Hawaii (while juggling coconuts!). Instead, I confessed to picking Oregon strawberries in order to earn money for school clothes.
If this middle school classic was the last writing prompt you used, then 1) I hope the sting of vacation shaming faded as quickly as an Oregon tan, and 2) I have great news for you as you plan your writing year.

Whether it’s a few weeks off for holiday travel or a month or more of parental leave, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to taking time off from freelancing. Unlike their corporate counterparts, freelance writers don’t have paid time off or parental leave benefits, but taking time away to recharge or bond with new family members can help them stay creatively engaged and productive.
Here are some strategies for planning time off.

It’s often said that everyone has a novel in them. But for those who have theirs already written and ready to go, the question often becomes – what now? Self publishing is sometimes sniffed at, but actually, for many it’s the best option.
You might seek to go down the traditional route, but this process is not for the faint hearted. If you are successful it will likely take an average of two years to get your book to market after you have secured a deal.
