I have been an ASJA member since the early 1990s. Through good times and bad, renewing my membership has been as essential as paying taxes and feeding the cats, although the consequences of not doing either of the latter two might possibly be more dire. But not by much: In my more-than 25 years as a member, ASJA has been a lifeline, not only in helping me find work and keeping me up to speed on the latest trends, but perhaps more essential, providing emotional support and invaluable advice.
In a perfect world, ASJA membership might come with a guaranteed six-figure income and an endless supply of clients. “But it doesn’t work by osmosis,” observes membership chair Jennifer Gregory. “You get out of it what you put into it.” And in no particular order, here are some things about why it’s a good thing to join ASJA.

The American Society of Journalists and Authors has honored 11 young writers, between the ages of 14 and 25, for essays submitted in the organization’s call for personal stories from gay and transgender youth. The essay competition was made possible as part of a $35,000 national reporting project on the topic of “Gender Identity: What's the Cost?”
“These young writers have exposed a compelling need for society to pay close attention to the stress, anxiety and depression that they have experienced in their journeys,” says Milt Toby, ASJA President and a member of ASJA’s advisory committee on the national reporting project. The Writer
You wouldn’t be a writer if you didn’t dare to dream, and dream big. Whether the ambitions that drive you are creative, critical, commercial, or all three, those dreams (and delusions) are part of why you started writing in the first place. Wild hopes and lofty goals can help motivate you through the hardest and most dispiriting parts of the writing and publishing processes. But they also can throw you off track, position you for failure and even get in the way of the writing itself.

Columbia Journalism Review
Last week, Farhad Manjoo wrote a column entitled “Never Tweet,” in which the New York Times writer argued that Twitter is toxic for journalists, and that we should disengage from it as much as possible. “Twitter is ruining American journalism,” he said bluntly. The column sparked been plenty of commentary agreeing with him (much of it on Twitter, ironically). But there has also been a significant amount of pushback — and not just from the usual Twitter-addicted cohort, but journalists from a variety of backgrounds, who see it as a valuable reporting tool.

While the journalism community is slowly starting to take note of blockchain, for many it is still a mystery.
But there is more to this technology than just Bitcoin, and an increasing number of startups use blockchain to address some of the biggest problems journalists face today, like misinformation or lack of trust in the media brands.
