Member name: Christopher Johnston, Cleveland, OH
Success Story: For the 2011 ASJA Conference, I moderated a panel “Breaking Into Business Books,” which featured three literary agents, including John Willig. We hit it off and stayed in touch. I always tried to connect with him to at least say hello and chat for a few minutes at the following conferences. Last year, he sold a book for me.

Trade magazines can provide writers with a steady source of income and interesting work, yet many writers aren't familiar with them and their editorial requirements. This session will cover what makes writing for trades different, what to expect for assignments and fees, and how to get steady work from trade magazine editors.
That's what we'll talk about in this month's "Shop Talk" event.

Business 2 Community
Although all content published should be engaging, the most often overlooked first step in getting readers interested is by using headlines. Approximately 80 percent of readers will take a glance at your headlines, but only 20 percent of them will actually click on the article to read the rest. In just a few words, you have the power to make your content sound interesting. Or, you have the ability to push them away. This means that, even though there are fewer words, most content writers probably need to spend more time thinking about their headlines than they actually do.

When you're a freelancer, you're also running a small business. Being self-employed inevitably makes tax season complicated. That's why many freelancers have chosen to establish their own businesses legally. There are three types of business structures most freelancers register under: sole proprietor, LLC and S corp. There are advantages and disadvantages to all, and each situation allows you to deduct for business costs.

Columbia Journalism Review
The failures of the press in the 2016 election have by now become familiar: an over-emphasis on personality and politics, a lack of detailed coverage of policy, a focus on the controversial and provocative. These failures were fundamentally not the result of any lack of ability or courage on the part of journalists, or even commercial pressures on news organizations, believes William Berkson, a philosopher who has written on scientific method. They were rather caused by the lack of a clear and strong model for drawing fair and objective conclusions about the candidates’ policies. Lacking a strong model, journalists desiring to be fair instead fell back on a misguided ideal of “balance,” a confused notion that misled them time after time.

The WRITER
Everyone should regularly attend writing conferences. Doctors, lawyers and teachers are required to officially continue their education throughout their careers, and a writing career is no less demanding than those professions. But if that doesn’t persuade you, here are a few more self-serving reasons why writing conferences should be part of your life.

Sandra Gurvis, Editor of ASJA Confidential Blog
Welcome to the new, improved ASJA Confidential! ASJA Confidential has been repurposed as a weekly blog, both as part of the ASJA Weekly e-newsletter and also replacing “The Word” on the asja.org web site. Since the Confidential is about all members, all the time, I would like to start out by posing an intriguing and often difficult question and soliciting your feedback on a subject we don’t want to happen but sadly, sometimes does.
What would you do in event of a catastrophe, either personal or physical? If you were diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, experienced a fire or other natural disaster that forced a sudden relocation, or had a devastating death of a close family member? I’m not talking about having a bad day when your car breaks down or your kids are unexpectedly home from school, wreaking havoc with your work schedule. I’m talking serious, earth-shattering stuff.

ASJA’s Advocacy Committee is working to protect copyright law. They need some volunteers to research which members of congress have published books. The work will take about 2 hours, depending on how many people volunteer. Through this process, members will learn about copyright initiatives, get background info on members of Congress and help ASJA advocate on behalf of published writers (that’s us!). The work needs to be completed by the end of February and can be done from anywhere. Interested? Email asjaoffice@asja.org with the subject line "FAO: Christy Lyons."

The next round of Virtual Client Connections is coming up at the end of this month. The organizers need someone to help ASJA members set up their Skype connections and assist members with issues. The organizers have detailed directions and a written FAQ to help. This job will take about 4 hours the week of February 20 and 1-2 hours during the week of February 28. Volunteers will get a meeting with an editor in return for this service. Contact JenniferGregory@nc.rr.com if you’re interested.
