If you’re registered for the 2020 ASJA conference in New York City (New York Marriott Downtown, on April 19-20), and wondering what to do next, consider volunteering in one of the following two ways to help us prepare. We promise they are fun and easy!
- Host a lunch on Sunday, April 19. Just come up with a theme (science writing, memoir, food writing, etc.) and email associate conference chair Kristine Hansen. Attendees sign up for your lunch on a Google sheet and pay for their own meal. We can even help you find a nearby place.
- Invite editors and literary agents to meet with attendee writers (via short speed-dating-like appointments created on a lottery system) on the afternoon of Monday, April 20. Client Connections co-chairs Jeanette Hurt and Erin O'Donnell have already created an invite ... all you need to do is hit "send!" We've found that the best editors and agents to participate in this event are already familiar with our membership.

We have room for two more Special Interest Group leaders for the upcoming session. SIGs are four-week discussions held in a special section of the forum, where participants can learn and collaborate on topics relating to writing careers. The spring session begins April 27. How I landed the gig: I’m old school. I love pitching over the phone and in person, because if you’ve got a well-researched story idea you can always tweak the angle based on the editor’s initial response. This has worked multiple times, at various ASJA conferences and on the phone with Virtual Client Connections. The key: be prepared for the two-minute drill. Quickly introduce yourself, think of a catchy headline that would fit the publication coupled with a specific section and an angle that is right for the readership. Most recently, this happened with a Virtual Pitch Slam session for Landscape Architecture. Jennifer Reut, the senior editor liked the pitch, accepted the story idea and ended up giving it more space and money once I did the reporting.
Net results: $3,000+
Comments about ASJA: The friendships, work connections, VPS and conferences have been invaluable. Thanks to meeting at ASJA’s annual conference, Megy Karydes and I started a writer accountability group in Chicago with other writers from ASJA. For the past six years, I’ve been a full-time freelance writer, working from a home office in rural Illinois. Remote work allows me the freedom and flexibility to work collaboratively with teams from all over the world. But just as living and working within the same square footage has its perks, this setup also has its drawbacks.
For one thing, it gets a little dull. It can also be distracting at times. Tasks like folding the laundry or putting the dishes away are always there as an excuse to put off writing projects just a little bit longer. It’s not always a great environment for highly focused work.

I do not watch the news.
I am a TV journalist with 25 years’ experience working for all the U.K.’s major news broadcasters, and I don’t watch the news. That is a problem for our industry, but mostly it is a problem with our industry.
When I do, occasionally, watch a news programme I rarely come away feeling I am better informed, I do not feel better equipped to engage with civil society and I do not feel like I understand the forces shaping the world better. These are the basics of journalism, and we are manifestly failing to live up to them.
