ASJA
Sign-up for Virtual Client Connections (where you can meet virtually with editors and agents and find new markets) begins TODAY at 2 p.m. EST on the Client Connections page of ASJA’s website on a first-come, first-served basis. This virtual event will be held from Feb. 26 – March 1. Stay tuned to the forums, ASJA Weekly and the Client Connections page on ASJA’s website for news about participating editors/agents. NextAvenue.org (for readers over 50) is participating and looking for feature and essay pitches. TripSavvy.com is a travel website looking for stand-alone stories as well as contributors to handle a destination or topic on a monthly basis.
Not sure if this is right for you? Many of our members have found new markets through VCC, which is offered several times a year, and through which members are connected with editors and agents by phone or Skype.

Editor’s note: Longtime ASJA member Julian Block is an attorney and author based in Larchmont, N.Y. He has been cited as: “a leading tax professional” (The New York Times); "an accomplished writer on taxes" (Wall Street Journal); and "an authority on tax planning" (Financial Planning Magazine). This article was originally published in the winter 2018-19 issue of ScienceWriters magazine.
In these tumultuous tax times, my clients bombard me with questions. Many of their queries concern Public Law No. 115-97, aka the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), signed by President Donald J. Trump on Dec. 23, 2017, just before Santa arrived.

So far, the competition in the Client Connections Recruitment Contest is relatively light — which means your odds of securing admission to an entire day of one of the year's must-attend writing events are high! Here's the scoop: The ASJA member who recruits the most Client Connections clients can attend one day of the 2019 conference for FREE.
To enter, send an email to Cindy Kuzma and let her know which clients — think publications, hospitals, nonprofits, universities, and content marketing agencies located in the greater New York City area — you can invite to Client Connections, the afternoon of one-on-one, nine-minute meetings to be held Monday, May 6, at the annual ASJA Conference in New York City. She’ll send you an invite form to forward and track who signs up. The member with the most clients who register wins! Contact Cindy with any questions.

“The generosity of ASJA members is unparalleled. I have received advice on story placement, ideas and editors, learned about industry news, advocated for my rights successfully in a class action lawsuit, and welcomed the efforts of volunteers to create outstanding programs. I have asked for bigger fees, and received them, thanks to ASJA members. The connections I have made, and continue to make, are invaluable.”
An anonymous donor has offered to match every contribution to ASJA, up to a total of $10,000. We’re about $4,000 away from our match goal. Please help by contributing today!
Give today to help ASJA continue to be the leading educational resource for freelancers.

The website Who Pays Writers? was founded in 2012 as a public, anonymous forum for freelancers to share their experiences working for publications. It collects data like pay, details of relationships with editors, and contract information. Its goal is to increase transparency and help writers negotiate for better rights and wages. With more than 3,000 submissions, covering over 1,000 publications, it is now the largest dataset of its kind and a consistent go-to resource for journalists.

Have you felt inspired to write a transformational book — one that will help your readers create change in their lives, organizations, or the world? That’s awesome because the world needs more transformational authors, or what I call “Authors of Change.”

A few years ago, I went to my first IRE conference. In addition to being intimidated by all the smart investigative journalists there (and a bit concerned about the 110-degree temps in Phoenix,) I was also freaked out about my assignment — to lead a talk on ethics.
I cover local news. I’ve covered ethics. But how on earth was I going to talk about them with any kind of authority? My colleague Kelly McBride, whom I was filling in for, spent time helping me get ready.

As reporters and editors find themselves the victims of layoffs at digital publishers and traditional newspaper chains alike, journalism generated by machine is on the rise.
Roughly a third of the content published by Bloomberg News uses some form of automated technology. The system used by the company, Cyborg, is able to assist reporters in churning out thousands of articles on company earnings reports each quarter.
