The Society for Features Journalism is accepting entries to its annual contest celebrating great storytelling and great writing. Open to all writers — freelance or professional — and all fields — digital, print, broadcast. First-place winners in each category will receive $300. Winners will be announced in June and honored at SFJ’s national conference in Kansas City, Missouri, in September. All entries must have been published in print or online between Jan. 1, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2016. For more information, click here.

The 34th Annual Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards (EFJ) — honoring the best in business news journalism — is calling for submissions. Broadcast, print, radio and online news organizations and reporters can submit financial news stories that were published, posted or aired between Jan. 1, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2016. Business book authors and publishers can also enter the national contest. The Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards in sponsored by the New York State Society of CPA’s and is judge by a select panel of NYSSCPA members. Awards will be given in nine categories and all entries must be received by 11:59 p.m., March 15, 2017. Entry fees are $75 for the first submission and $50 for each subsequent entry. The Academy is now accepting applications for its annual three-day workshop for journalists, a joint project of the Columbia Aging Center and the Columbia Journalism School. From June 8-10, the Academy will focus on inequities in health and work in old age, and will feature leading experts in journalism, science and economics. It is designed to educate journalists on the many dimensions of an unprecedented increase in life span around the world.
This program, funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, is designed for local reporters and national correspondents covering aspects of aging, work and retirement. Both staff reporters and freelancers are eligible to apply. Fellowships will cover travel, lodging and attendance fees. The application deadline is Friday, March 3.
