ASJA
Since their introduction several years ago, in-person pitch slams are some of the most popular events at
ASJA's NYC Conference.
(So popular, they're often held in the ballrooms!) This year, the conference chairs have designed three pitch slams, one for each of the three types of publishing ASJAers typically do: content marketing, book publishing and magazine/online stories. But if the idea of an on-the-spot, three-minute pitch to big-time editors, agents and content managers makes your hands sweat, never fear. Here's a simple how-to to help you prepare and set your expectations.

Can’t attend the ASJA Annual Conference but still want to earn perks for yourself while helping your fellow writers? Good news: The winner of the Client Connections Recruitment Contest — the person who invites the most editors/agents/other clients to the afternoon of one-on-one, nine-minute meetings to be held Monday, May 6, at the annual ASJA Conference in New York City — can now choose one of four prizes.
Here’s the scoop: Take a look at your client contacts and identify any at publications, hospitals, nonprofits, universities or content marketing agencies located in the greater New York City area. Send an email to contest coordinator
Cindy Kuzma
with their names, titles and email addresses. She’ll send you an email template you can use to invite them to particpate and add your name to a spreadsheet for tracking.
The member who successfully recruits the most clients to register WINS—and now, that person has a choice of prizes:
1) A free day at the NYC conference
2) A free day at the next regional conference
3) A set of conference recordings
4) A guaranteed pitching slot at either a Virtual Client Connections session or a Virtual Pitch Slam in 2019
Whether you are able to attend the conference or not, you can’t lose! Email
Cindy
with any questions.

For decades, we’ve known that Americans don’t trust the press. What we haven’t known is how people view the makings of journalism, from the use of fact checkers and anonymous sources to the question of whether money skews journalistic decision-making. Writing skills are becoming more important as almost all of our communication drifts online. If you’re an entrepreneur trying to drive traffic to your website, customers are going to be turned off if your site is riddled with errors. Newbies who are trying to add freelance writing to their salary also need training to compete for better jobs, and anyone trying to publish a creative story needs to brush up on their skill set to impress editors. The Copywriting Mastery Bundle covers all three of these bases for less than $25.
