ASJA
Today’s the day! Starting at 2:00 p.m. ET, you can sign up for a slot in our next VCC. Sign ups end on March 8, and you can sign up by clicking this link. Appointments will be set by March 9. Remember: sign up is first-come, first serve, so be ready at 2:00 p.m. ET today. (If you can’t make that time, have a another ASJA member or family member sign up for you.)
VCC is a very unique offering for ASJA professional members where you don't have to leave your computer or home office and can still have "face-to-face" meetings with editors via Skype or phone. Click here for a list of editors and publications, plus what they are looking for in pitches and writer connections. This time, we’ve got — among other editors — Endless Vacation (custom publication for timeshare owners and publishing travel content); Narrative.ly (great market for essays); Smithsonian online (looking for culture and history pitches) and Westways Magazine (AAA's West Coast magazine).
Questions about the process? Feel free to reach out to VCC Chair Kristine Hansen or check out the VCC FAQs.

An award-winning independent journalist, author and speaker based in Washington D.C., ASJA 2018 keynoter Katherine Reynolds Lewis is fast on the heels of the success – or shall we say, pre-success, of her about-to-be released first book, The Good News About Bad Behavior (PublicAffairs, April 2018). But hers is no overnight Cinderella tale. Along with spending over two decades as a working journalist and reporter, she gathered bylines from such notables as Bloomberg Businessweek, MSN Money, Money, The New York Times, Parade, Slate, and the Washington Post Magazine.

ASJA
Prosperous freelancers know there's enough success to go around, and that we all do better when we work together. Fortunately, there's an easy way to help your fellow writers find work and your clients connect with other top-notch talent, all while earning some bonus perks for yourself. Here's how it works: personally invite the editors and agents in your network to be a part of Client Connections, the afternoon of one-on-one, nine-minute meetings to be held Fri., May 18, at the ASJA Annual Conference in New York City.
The ASJA member who recruits the most Client Connections editors can attend Member's Day 2018 for FREE! (If you register for the conference and then win the contest, you'll be reimbursed the cost of Member's Day.) To enter:
- Look through your contacts for editors of publications, hospitals, nonprofits, universities and content marketing agencies located in the greater New York City area.
- Send a quick email to Contest Coordinator Cindy Kuzma with the name of the editor you want to invite. Cindy will send you the invitation to forward to your clients.
- Invite your clients to the 2018 Client Connections event via email, or give them a call.
- Once your client registers, you'll receive one point towards the free Member's Day Prize. All editors must register by April 29.
Client Connections will only be as good as the contacts you help us find! Thanks for helping your fellow writers.

ASJA members have many stories to share about how ASJA is part of their business strategy, as well as a support system.
When people consider joining ASJA or debate renewing their membership, they might ask themselves, “What can ASJA give me?” There are many answers, such as the forums, the job search section, and the paycheck database, but other answers may not be as obvious. This is where your success stories come in. What is it about ASJA that has helped you move your business or career forward? Did you sell an article to a dream market you learned about on a Virtual Pitch Slam call? Did you land an anchor client through a referral from an ASJA-er you met at a conference? Did you learn how to negotiate a better advance because of a panel you listened to? Did you discover ways to collect overdue payments because of a thread on the forums? We’d like to share your success story with other members and those are considering ASJA membership. Click here to see what others have shared. (The stories are very short, so they don’t take a lot of your time.) Then email Marijke Vroomen Durning to volunteer to tell your story.

Work pressure is one of the leading causes of stress. In fact, according to Statistic Brain, in the U.S. alone, 77 percent of working individuals state that they have physical symptoms from stress. What’s more — U.S. businesses lose about $300 billion a year due to absenteeism and healthcare costs related to stress. This is no less a problem for freelancers who work with many clients and face an ever-increasing competitive market.
So how can freelancers cope with the everyday stressors they face? Research has some interesting answers.

In some regions, digital and online spaces are the only platforms where journalists may exercise freedom of expression. One result is that online harassment is a growing problem for all journalists, and especially women journalists, across the globe. There is, however, no empirical data with which organizations can identify the scope and impact of the problem and address them.

Sometimes leaving your 9-5 and freelancing can feel very similar to working for the man.
Yes, freelancing provides more freedom and flexibility but as you get settled into a routine and realize it’s not all about sleeping in and working whenever you want, you can start to feel like you’re working for all your clients instead of with them. If you want to freelance and still be your own boss by running things like a business, here are a few things you can do.

Journalists in America's major newsrooms are asking a question of their bosses: Is anyone in charge here?
Turmoil is currently engulfing The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Time Inc., NPR, and others — enough in fact to mark this moment as one in which internal civil wars are threatening to break out unless something changes.
And the only thing that will fix it is a wholesale reckoning with newsroom culture that many newsrooms have long ignored and only just started to address.
