ASJA offers so many opportunities for members to connect with potential clients and with each other, which hopefully lands us all more work. We'll feature member success stories each week. Share your success stories with us! Contact marijke@medhealthwriter.com.
Member name: Jerome M. O'Connor, Elmhurst, Illinois
Success Story: I sold a book proposal to a publisher through agent John Willig of Literary Services.
How I landed the gig: I attended the 2016 ASJA annual meeting with one objective: persuade an agent at Client Connections that my book about the discovery in 1977 of the fully furnished but forgotten Churchill Cabinet War Rooms in London would be different in its methodology and revelations then the many thousands of books about the war, and that it should coincide with the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, certain to be an international event. With John Willig of Literary Services, it became an immediate connection. After the brief pitch I asked for his opinion. "On a scale of one to ten, I would give it an eleven," he said. The book is expected to be released in early 2019.

By becoming an ASJA Member now, you can attend ASJA Member’s Day on May 5 to participate in programming geared to experienced freelancers and our popular Client Connections events, where members register for a lottery to meet with top editors, agents and content agencies (check out our list of participating editors). If you are not an ASJA member but meet membership qualifications, apply for ASJA membership by March 12 — the deadline for new applications before the Conference. Membership applications submitted after this deadline will not be processed in time for the new member to participate in Client Connections at the conference.
Many ASJA members land new clients through this event and other ASJA benefits to pay for their conference expenses and membership dues many times over. Check out our Member Success Stories to see how ASJA can improve your income and career.

Few industries have been as affected by technology as much as journalism. More than just a seismic shift from print to web to mobile devices, news now is gathered with the help of all types of tools, and smart newsrooms are making sure there’s as much room for social teams or podcast studios as for national desks.

The WRITER
It was the perfect story: "Sarah" was at The Gap, singing softly to herself. A man leaned in as he passed.
“Don’t quit your day job,” he whispered.
Little did he know, singing was her day job.
By the time Sarah told me this story, she had, in fact, quit her day job to become a personal trainer.
I interviewed Sarah for two hours, after which I wrote up the story and submitted it. The editor then requested that Sarah offer three simple, overall-toning exercises.
The slam-dunk assignment suddenly became the assignment I couldn’t even drag onto the court.
Sarah did not want to provide three simple exercises. Only she didn’t tell me this up front. Instead she said she would get them to me in a few days, then didn’t.

There are certain agreed-upon resume standards that apply to almost all 9-to-5 job seekers — but when you’re a freelancer, some of those rules go out the window and you’re forced to make some critical decisions about how best to present your different skills to potential clients.

The Member’s Day afternoon offers the hugely popular and wildly successful lottery-based Client Connections, one-on-one sessions with potential editors, agents, publishers and content providers which can garner assignments and book contracts. Or whet your appetite for
increased income with a pre-lunch writing pitch slam that provides instant feedback and allows for on-the-spot assignments. Also in the afternoon are three separate sessions on building your own platform: “The Making of a Bestseller” moderated by Tim Harper; “How to Get Noticed on Social Media” with Nicole Feliciano; and “How Are You-Dot-Com Doing? Is It Time for a Website Overhaul?” with Eyal Solomon. Also Lisa Sharkey will moderate “Facebook Live and Beyond: The Future of Author Promotions,” a real-time online event with HarperCollins, which illustrates how technology can help boost your book sales.

By Jennifer Goforth Gregory
We had our fourth member-wide VCC last week and it was a huge success with several members already landing assignments from their editor meetings.
It takes an army of volunteers to make VCC happen and we could do not do this event without each and every member who donates their time to VCC. I want to give a huge thanks to our hosts and host leaders for the Feb 2017 VCC – Leslie Lang, Kristine Hansen, Michelle Groenke, Suzanne Boles, Joelle Klein, Robert DiGiacomo, Judy Colbert, Lorna Collier, Kristin Rattini, Sandra Gordon and Teresa Meek.
