In this day and age, journalism plays a pretty big role in many freelancers' lives. That's why we've cooked up some smart panels and resources for freelancers at the annual ASJA NYC Conference, May 5-6. Along with the opportunity to pitch your stories to editors via Client Connections, you can find more work online ("Step-by-Step Guide to Finding Online Publications"), step carefully with difficult stories ("Art of Writing About Trauma"), and reconsider your pitches and sources ("Representation Matters"). Register now to get the Early Bird Discount.

In only a few years as a freelancer, ASJA member Sarah Stankorb has already compiled an envious list of credits: Washington Post and The New York Times, among many others. Yet it hasn't always been easy: Along with juggling two young children, full-time employment, which she eventually left to freelance, and serving on her local city council, the Ohio-based writer still manages to find time to work with her top New York City agent on her book. In 2014, she helped co-create the term "Xennials," designating the microgeneration of Millennials born between 1977–1983 into the cultural lexicon. Today, her beat spans social enterprise, feminism, the environment, health, motherhood, religion and cultural commentary.

Join ASJA's Southern California Chapter on April 18 to learn research-driven strategies from PEN America’s Online Harassment Field Manual. PEN experts will train participants and answer questions on how journalists, their allies and their employers, can defend against online abuse, including preparation, response, legal considerations, self-care and best practices for offering support. The goal: empowering writers and journalists to stay online and continue exercising their free-expression rights. This is a joint meeting with ASJA, PEN and the Los Angeles Press Club, on Thursday, April 18, from 6-8 p.m. at 6500 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028.
RSVP required: info@lapressclub.org
PEN America is open to working with other ASJA chapters and writer groups on similar training events. If interested, contact PEN via HarassmentHelp@pen.org

If you can't come to the annual ASJA Conference May 5-6 but still want to participate, don't fret. You can make your influence known and build goodwill with your fellow members by participating in the Client Connections Recruitment Contest — and if you win, you'll walk away with conference recordings or another valuable prize.
Here's how. Take a look at your client contacts and identify those who work at publications, hospitals, nonprofits, universities or content marketing agencies located in the greater New York City area. Consider whether any would be a good fit to attend Client Connections, the afternoon of one-on-one, nine-minute meetings to be held Monday, May 6.
If so, send an email to contest coordinator Cindy Kuzma with their names, titles and email addresses. She'll send you an email template you can use to invite them to participate and add your name to a spreadsheet for tracking.
The member who successfully recruits the most clients to register wins — and now, that person has a choice of prizes:
- A free day at the NYC conference
- A free day at the next regional conference
- A set of conference recordings
- A guaranteed pitching slot at either a Virtual Client Connections session or a Virtual Pitch Slam in 2019
Thanks in advance for helping make Client Connections a success for everyone involved! Email Cindy with any questions.

It’s not easy to promote a book, and for self-published authors on a tight budget, it can be especially challenging.
Reedsy — a U.K.-based publishing startup that connects authors with editors, designers and marketers who can help them with their projects — has announced a new service to help them called Reedsy Discovery. Reedsy Discovery, which launched on March 4, will let readers know about books its expert reviewers have recommended every week.

In the current age, it is easy to write off journalism, and subsequently related majors such as public relations, communications, and many more, as useless.
The world of journalism is undoubtedly changing, and there is no denying that fact. This is more an indicator of a growing shift in the industry, however, rather than of a dying breed of jobs.
