Daniel Jones, longtime editor of The New York Times “Modern Love” columns is one of the most sought-after individuals in the writing biz. But despite his distinguished track record and credits, he’s down-to-earth and approachable, preferring to be called “Dan” during conversation rather than the formal version of his name. He’s a tough taskmaster when it comes to column selection and is on trend in terms of its branding. He shares tips and advice with ASJA Confidential, with more to come during the May conference.

Prosperous freelancers know there's enough success to go around, and that we all do better when we work together. Fortunately, there's an easy way to help your fellow writers find work and your clients connect with other top-notch talent, all while earning some bonus perks for yourself. Here's how it works: personally invite the editors and agents in your network to be a part of Client Connections, the afternoon of one-on-one, nine-minute meetings to be held Fri., May 18, at the ASJA Annual Conference in New York City.
The ASJA member who recruits the most Client Connections editors can attend Member's Day 2018 for FREE! (If you register for the conference and then win the contest, you'll be reimbursed the cost of Member's Day.) To enter:
- Look through your contacts for editors of publications, hospitals, nonprofits, universities and content marketing agencies located in the greater New York City area.
- Send a quick email to Contest Coordinator Cindy Kuzma with the name of the editor you want to invite. Cindy will send you the invitation to forward to your clients.
- Invite your clients to the 2018 Client Connections event via email, or give them a call.
- Once your client registers, you'll receive one point towards the free Member's Day Prize. All editors must register by April 29.
Client Connections will only be as good as the contacts you help us find! Thanks for helping your fellow writers.

As of March 31, ASJA will no longer offer magazine subscription discount to its members. Because each subscription must be processed manually, ASJA averages close to $50 per subscription in staff hours, which is costlier than many magazine orders. Members who have already placed a subscription will continue to receive their magazine for the rest of the subscription period. New orders may be placed until March 31.
The good news is that plenty of other programs offer discounts on magazine subscriptions. Here are a few.
- Magazines.com offers discounts of up to around 86% off a number of subscriptions.
- Kindle (through Amazon.com) offers some annual subscriptions at a discounted rate. (HGTV is offered at $5 per year, versus $19.99 per year for a print subscription)
- Nook offers 50% off select annual subscriptions.
- A number of magazines are free via online public library resources. (RBdigital is one platform.) Check with your local public library or online for details.
- The Texture app currently offers a $9.99 per month subscription and 14-day free trial for unlimited access to electronic versions of popular magazines.
- Groupon offers discounts on select magazine subscriptions. (Currently, Redbook is $5 per year instead of $10 per year. Popular Science is currently $6 per year instead of $12 per year.)
- Check your credit card points at Chase, American Express, Discover, and Citi. You can redeem them directly through Amazon.com for purchases, including magazine subscriptions.

Early on in my career, having published a few articles, I began keeping a list of these freelance writing jewels. As the years went by and I continued writing, I added titles of newly published pieces, and also recorded relevant activities such as coursework and workshops. Decades later, I am the proud owner of an inventory of published works and pertinent writing-related endeavors.

Columbia Journalism Review
The surge of student-led activism that was born in the wake of last month’s devastating school shooting in Parkland, Florida, has brought the powerful voices of teenagers and children to cable news reports, newspapers, and digital and magazine outlets across the country in a major way. Theirs are voices that have traditionally been discounted and overlooked as thoughtful sources in the media, but as they organize massive student actions like this week’s national school walkout in protest of gun violence, reporters are increasingly turning their mics away from experts and talking heads and toward the kids. And they have much to say.
