When researching American Reconstruction for my novel, I was grappling with both the appropriate language and the details of the events. While I was writing about Victoria Woodhull and Susan B. Anthony, various biographies of these women contradicted one another and I wanted to find primary sources without having to travel to several different archives. I also wanted a sense for how different words and idioms were used in everyday conversation. One day after the Authors Guild filed its final reply brief with the Supreme Court in Authors Guild vs. Google, the guild's long-running copyright battle over Google's library book-scanning project, the Supreme Court has put the case on the calendar for its April 1 conference. With the meeting date set, the final act in the case could finally be upon us after a more than 10-year legal odyssey.

Last week, Tribune Publishing won an auction for a coveted asset — Freedom Communications, the parent company of The Orange County Register and The Press-Enterprise of Riverside, Calif. On Monday, however, the company could only watch as the sale of Freedom to Digital First Media was approved by a judge. Tribune Publishing, which also owns The Los Angeles Times, The San Diego Union-Tribune and The Chicago Tribune, had a $56 million bid for Freedom accepted before the Justice Department stepped in to object to the deal, arguing that it would result in a newspaper monopoly in Southern California.

One of the easiest ways to learn what makes a good, standard query letter is simply to see an example of one that does its job well. If you write fiction or narrative nonfiction, a query letter is your first (and often, your only) chance to get an agent interested in reading (and, with hope, signing) your work. You should put just as much care and attention into crafting and polishing your query as you did into your manuscript. After all, if your pitch doesn't hit its mark, your book will never leave your desktop.

Revenue at Penguin Random House rose 11.8 percent in 2015 over 2014, parent company Bertelsmann reported this morning. The publisher's revenue jumped to 3.7 billion euros, while profits rose 23.2 percent, to 557 million euros. The revenue gain was due almost entirely to favorable exchange rates, while the improvement in earnings was attributed to exchange rates and savings achieved through the further integration of Random House and Penguin.
