ASJA
ASJA’s Client Connections team is pulling together our biggest Virtual Client Connections in history! Tele-Connections will feature many of the editors, agents and publishers who would have been at the NYC Client Connections. They will hear ASJA pitches virtually on Monday, April 20, and Tuesday, April 21, in the afternoons. An initial email was sent on Friday; watch for more details to come your way later this week, including how to register. This is a professional, members-only benefit with a fee of $65. As with our in-person Client Connections program, whose cost is folded into the conference registration, appointments cannot be guaranteed. Registration will be held from 9 a.m., April 6, through 9 p.m., April 8, (Eastern time). The client list is still growing, and you can see it here. All details will be announced soon.
What's Happening with Conference Refunds?

ASJA
Last week, we announced that registrants for ASJA’s NYC conference could receive either a full refund of their registration fees or apply them to the 2021 conference registration. If you have contacted the ASJA office with your preference, we are processing your request now. Refunds (via credit card, not check) will be processed first, with deferment requests being managed later. Feeling generous? You can also turn your registration fee into a donation to ASJA, either to our operating funds, the 75th Anniversary Campaign (which will fund a new ASJA website) or our Writer’s Emergency Assistance Fund (WEAF). The deadline for making a choice is April 19. If you have not alerted the office by that time, you will automatically receive a refund.

ASJA’s management company, Kellen, has developed a spreadsheet of national and state-by-state resources for small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic. While most freelance writers would not qualify for many of these programs, we’re sharing it for those who have employees or for those pitching stories that might benefit from this information. Access the spreadsheet here.

Now that we're all hunkered down, the closest thing we have to a back fence over which neighbors trade tips and wisdom — and the occasional gossip tidbit — is the Forum. Found in the member section of the website, it’s the place to seek or give answers, find job opportunities, commiserate, complain, or connect.

The Writer
To be a freelancer is to dabble in the art of indulgence — ah, the simple joy of a homemade lunch — between phone meetings and transcribing. An unfortunate byproduct is that that attitude seeps into the job. We have control over our environment, so it should spread to editors, the people we deal with on a regular basis.
This mindset is understandable. Save from deadlines, you’re shielded from the entrenched expectations of others, a joyous highlight of being self-employed.

Amid the disruption to the news industry because of the coronavirus pandemic, freelance journalists have been particularly affected by paid projects being cancelled at short notice.
Recognizing this challenge, two freelance journalists, Emma Wilkinson and Lily Canter, recorded a special podcast to offer advice and support to fellow freelancers worried about their finances.

This year, my sixth as a freelance journalist, started with a phone conversation with an editor. I figured the call would either be a starting shot blasted into the air or a bullet fired directly into my foot. For years, I’d been living in Portland, Oregon, and serving proudly as a member of the Washington Post’s Talent Network, which involved covering breaking news on everything from race to politics to western courtroom dramas.
