Jenna Glatzer, ASJA
As a long-time ghostwriter, I can often anticipate the reasons publishers may turn down a client's book, or offer a low advance for it. One of the reasons that often surprise clients is overexposure.
Here’s the thing: When a story goes viral online, or a person appears all over talk shows and the news, you may assume that means a book deal is going to be easy. In fact, it may be a handicap. What publishers see from that is, "The story is already over."

In 1962, Alfred Hitchcock and Francois Truffaut discussed their work during a marathon lasting 50 hours over five days. The two great directors and their French/English interpreter barely paused for meals. It was during this conversation that Hitchcock gave his famous surprise versus suspense example — the bomb planted in the café. He used this example to demonstrate that contrary to popular belief, suspense is far more engaging than surprise.

A month or so ago, Facebook reported its earnings for the fourth quarter of 2015, and let's just say they crushed the ball. Knocked the cover off. Pointed to the bleachers and then hit it out of the park. The big moneymaker was its burgeoning video ad business. Facebook states that people are watching 100 million hours of video per day on its social platform. More than 500 million people watch Facebook video every day.

"Emma, your freelance writing work is wonderful. We can't wait to work with you again." When a client tells me this, I get extremely happy. They've seen that I'm a dedicated writer, are pleased with the results, and will likely hire me again. As a freelance storyteller and marketing consultant, client testimonials are important for securing new freelance writing jobs. These testimonials, whether they’re on LinkedIn, a personal website, or in an email signature, act as social proof. They encourage prospective clients to trust me, as they can see that others do.

Talk to content publishers, and they'll often bemoan the fact that few visitors reach their sites through the home page any more. The real action, they'll say, is from "side door" visits directly to a specific story, via a link shared by social media, texting, email, or from a topic-centered search. This "death of the home page" wave became an accepted wisdom after mid-2014, when a leaked chart from The New York Times showed the steep plunge in that newspaper's home page visitors.

Do you want to sell more books and increase the value of your author brand? Then give some of your e-books away for free. To many authors, the idea of giving their work away for free is counterintuitive — and possibly abhorrent and sacrilegious. Free devalues your work, right?
Wrong. Free makes your work more valuable. As an author, you are a brand. Readers buy books from authors who have earned their trust.

Why are publishers using Instagram to promote their books and brands? According to Socialbakers, the top brands on Instagram have a 47 times higher average post engagement rate than the top brands on Twitter. And then there's the scale. As of September 2015, Instagram had 400 million monthly active users, more than Twitter's 316 million. So while Instagram isn't an ROI-driven marketing tool, it can have a big impact on book branding.

If you are a self-published author with aspirations to get a traditional publishing deal it is important to have an agent. Major publishers and their imprints normally do not accept unsolicited manuscripts and an agent can assist with getting your book into the right hands. Researching literary agents is complicated enough without having to worry about whether or not the agent is reputable. Unfortunately, you do have to worry. Too many agents engage in abuses–charging upfront fees, participating in kickback referral schemes, urging writers to pay for expensive adjunct services, even steering clients into the clutches of vanity publishers. There is one service that indie authors are raving about, its called QueryTracker.
