Joanne Lipman, Editor-in-Chief, USA TODAY, will emcee the Outstanding Writing Awards given by the American Society of Journalists and Authors, ASJA, during the May 5 gala at the Roosevelt Hotel. The winning articles and books all were produced on a freelance basis, and all the winners are self-employed writing professionals.
The awards ceremony will be held as part of ASJA’s annual writers’ conference May 5-6, also at the Roosevelt. This will be the 46th year for what is the nation’s longest-established gathering on writing techniques and how to support yourself as a writer. The second day of the conference is open to non-members.

Ms. Lipman, who also is senior vice president and chief content officer of the USA TODAY Network, will join the writers being honored during a reception and then present the awards. "ASJA is so honored that Joanne Lipman will be emceeing our awards ceremony," says awards co-chair Janine Latus. "She will add prestige to an already important event, which is what our award winners deserve."
Ms. Lipman began her career as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, ultimately rising to deputy managing editor – the first woman to attain that post – and supervising coverage that won three Pulitzer Prizes. While at the Journal, she created Weekend Journal and Personal Journal and oversaw creation of the paper’s Saturday edition. She subsequently was founding editor-in-chief of Conde Nast Portfolio magazine and portfolio.com, which won Loeb and National Magazine Awards. Ms. Lipman is co-author of the acclaimed music memoir “Strings Attached,” and author of an upcoming book about closing the gender gap at work, to be published by William Morrow. Ms. Lipman is a winner of the Matrix Award from New York Women in Communications.
Tickets are available here. Winners of the 2017 ASJA writing awards can be found here.

Member Name: Dorri Olds
Success Story: Personal essays in Woman's Day
How I landed the gig: Client Connections meeting with an editor at ASJA 2016 in NYC
Net results: Three of my personal essays were published
Comments: ASJA is so worth the cost of membership. Every year that I attend the annual conference in New York City, I make back much more money than I spent. Last year, during speed pitches, I met the lovely Woman's Day editor, Maria Carter. We hit it off immediately. She has published three of my personal essays and is a dream to work with. Thank you, ASJA!

Having multiple clients as a freelancer is a double-edged sword. While it’s good for the growth of your personal brand and earning potential, juggling multiple projects from these clients can lead to great stress and, in some cases, the decline of your overall work quality.

Standalone alternative story forms do just what their name implies: They stand alone as independent stories, with no traditional story to accompany them. Like a standalone photo or graphic, the standalone ASF needs to be a complete story. It might be all the reader will see about the topic, particularly in print media.

No matter what kind of work you do, there has to be a way for you to generate business. If you work for someone else, your employer does so on your behalf, such as when a car company advertises its products and creates demand for the work of the people who build the vehicles.
But when you work for yourself, you have to create that market yourself. Your skills may be second to none, but they're not going to make you any money if no one knows that.

Last week, we wrote of a major style change by The Associated Press and The Chicago Manual of Style, allowing “they” as a singular pronoun in some circumstances.
Lost in the hubbub of that change were other style changes announced by the AP, whose style manual is used by many if not most news organizations.
Most of them are far less earth-shattering, but still useful.

Editor’s note: Several weeks ago, ASJA Confidential posed the question: What would you do in event of a catastrophe, either personal or physical? Member Randi Minetor shared the following experience.
As Phillip Roth said long ago, “We writers are lucky. Nothing truly bad can happen to us — it’s all material.”
I faced a catastrophic event some years ago, when I was a VP at an advertising agency. The agency was owned by a husband and wife team, and the wife was killed in a car accident one afternoon. I talked to her by phone at 3:30, and at 5:30 she was dead. Not only did we have to deal with the sudden loss and the emotional wrenching that day and for months after, but the agency was built on a “work no matter what” culture. With Audrey’s death, we all felt that she would want us to just keep working, regardless of how we felt. That being said, her death was well covered by the media, so everyone knew.
