What does the COVID-19 crisis mean for your freelance content marketing career? Should you continue sending out LOIs to new clients during this unprecedented time? How should you be addressing the crisis with new and current clients? What is the prediction for content marketing in the next few months? During this hour-long session, content marketing editors and experts will answer these questions. At the end of the session, we will give you the tools to help you create a plan that will keep your calendar filled with assignments in the near future. Free recordings will be available at the end of the month (for members only).
Volunteers Needed for Virtual Content Rollout

ASJA
Are you passionate about creating virtual learning opportunities for ASJA members and truly want to give back to your writing community? Or maybe you want to diversify your resume by tacking on new skills? In the coming months, ASJA will be rolling out virtual content (a mix of live webinars and pre-recorded content, as a carryover from ASJA’s 2020 conference and its unfortunate cancellation). We're looking for volunteers to help wrangle and support these editors, agents, panelists and moderators to help provide enriching experiences for our members. In exchange for your work, you'll receive complimentary access to these webinars and recordings. If you're interested in helping, whether you're a techie or not, reach out to Kristine Hansen, ASJA 2020 and 2021 Conference Chair. Not sure what role you want to play? Don't worry, we'll find a task for you!

Twenty-three years ago, I started researching one of the nation’s oldest active missing-child cases, a mystery that began less than four miles from my own house in Minneapolis. In 1951, three brothers — Kenneth Jr., 8, David, 6, and Danny Klein, 4 — vanished on a Saturday afternoon on their way to a park. The police investigated and closed the case after only five days, concluding that the boys drowned in the Mississippi River, more than a mile away from home, and that no foul play occurred.

ASJA member Stacey Freed was having a hard time filing for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance on the New York State Labor Department website. As she’d heard from others, there is no clear path to a particular URL (although there is a page of guidelines for how to fill out the form). To help others in the same predicament, she posted a step-by-step guide on the forum:

Some of the hardest words to say are “I need help,” especially during the times when you need help the most. While we are all trying to make sense of the “new normal,” or this “adaptation phase,” knowing what to do to help others is often easier than helping ourselves.
With the rise of freelancers and the gig economy, the benefits are out there if you know where to look.

So you wrote your article or essay and feel ready to click send. Not so fast. Once you have written a piece, it’s important to edit yourself and revise. The New York Times
As the novel coronavirus spread to all parts of the globe, the task of reporting a story of extraordinary magnitude enveloped the New York Times newsrooms.
Journalists across more than a dozen departments, and a few continents, are stepping up — and shuffling roles — to meet the challenge.

Two years ago, I took my thriving freelance-writing business down to 20 hours a week of work, as I noticed that I had fallen into the trap of “More hours means more output, right?” At that point I had been writing full-time as a freelancer for six solid years and was growing tired of the grind. Since then, I’ve been able to run my freelance business as a part-time venture while still maintaining consistent high revenue.

The last month has shown us that the news industry, despite a dramatic spike in readership, is in no way immune to the coronavirus. Layoffs, furloughs, closures, salary cuts: On Monday, The Dallas Morning News became only the latest newsroom to announce pay reductions for its staff.
I won’t go through the long list of publishers that have done the same or worse, but I’ll link you to Poynter’s list instead.
