The magazine editor is a paid, contracted position. Applicants should have at least five years of experience writing for major print publications as a staff member or freelancer, as well as at least five years of experience as a magazine editor or associate editor. When I first entered the writing world some 30 years ago, the lines were clearly drawn. Of course all this has changed. Today many journalists, especially freelancers who make their living writing, do content writing as well as more traditional magazine and newspaper journalism. And while most of us have a pretty good grasp of what the rules of engagement are for each, there are conflicts and frustrations when trying to do both.
“Sometimes I find myself self-censoring with content marketing,” observes ASJA member Mark Ray, who writes for several Boy Scouts of America publications as well as Costco Connection, AARP the Magazine and Aetna insurance. When working with content clients, he measures whether the subject will conflict with what they are trying to communicate with their audience: “Am I pushing the boundaries too much?”

But what does minimalism have to do with our writing careers?

Do you find it difficult to write what you really want to write? Does the blank page sometimes seem insurmountable? It’s become a cliché that writers are angst-ridden people, sweating blood and riddled with anxiety and low self-esteem.
In fact, it’s always been accepted that pain and suffering simply go hand-in-hand with being a writer. But most people haven’t delved deeper to find out what’s beneath this. And I have to admit I only did so by accident.

"We are living in a post-truth era where objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appealing to emotions and personal beliefs," said Yaser Bishr, executive director of digital at Al Jazeera Media Network, speaking at the Digital Innovators’ Summit on March 25.
To help journalists get the facts across, he suggested the media should use the same techniques as social platforms.

As a freelancer, you are probably a do-it-yourselfer by nature, tackling your core business and all the tedious duties that go with it on your own. That’s why, when you're considering whether to outsource the bookkeeping, you may be reluctant to take the leap.
That could be the case for a variety of reasons. You may be very disciplined and good at setting aside time each day to log your financial transactions and reconcile your accounts.
