ASJA
While the precise origins of ASJA are shrouded in the mists of time, back in 1948 the switch from fiction to primarily nonfiction in magazines propelled the organization of what was originally called the Society of Magazine Writers. The camaraderie, unity and sense of support and finding one’s tribe has remained unchanged throughout the decades as have, unfortunately, article rates, some of which have actually dropped. In the 1950s “Today’s Woman paid $750, ‘sometimes higher’ for a story that ‘people will talk about,’” wrote anthology editor Susan Tyler Hitchcock, in the introduction. “Nation’s Business paid $500 to $1,000 for a feature. Time paid $1,000 for a profile….” Cringe.

That’s thanks in part to the more than a dozen members who have invited them, all of whom are currently in the running for the chance to win a free Member’s Day to the conference (the member who successfully recruits the most clients wins). It’s not too late to join them by inviting YOUR contacts. Remember, the more clients we sign up, the more picks and one-on-one meetings everyone will have at the conference! Email Contest Coordinator Cindy Kuzma for details and an invitation template you can send directly to your contacts.

Columbia Journalism Review
Journalists overestimate how much Americans know and care about journalism. The general public doesn’t care as much about press freedom and the First Amendment as we hope. They don’t know as much about the basic principles of journalism as we assume. And they sure as hell don’t trust journalism as much as we would like.

Forbes
The gender pay gap remains a debated issue and is still a hotly contested matter within the freelance community as well.
As I mentioned in a previous article, statistics are still lacking on gender pay discrepancy within many freelance niches, but what is known is this: In those niches studied, the pay gap is high — as much as 32 percent.

The Center for Media Engagement
Women journalists face the threat of online harassment as they do their jobs of trying to engage with their audience over social media. This harassment can be different from what male journalists face because it can target women based on their gender or sexuality. This harassment — vitriolic sexist attacks or inappropriately sexual barbs — mirrors the experiences of many women in general online.
