The American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) does not endorse any company, product, or service sold by any corporation, institution or member supporting our organization. Corporate partnerships, advertisers and sponsors are not an endorsement of a product or service and may not be represented as such, in any way. The use of the ASJA name and/or logo, or representation of such, without the written consent of ASJA, is strictly prohibited.
In case you missed it, last week the Associated Press tweeted that we all need to do away with the word “mistress” for a woman romantically involved with a married person. Putting aside any feelings on the matter itself, can I just say how much I loved the ASJA Facebook page discussion that ensued? From historical context to gendered language (mistress vs. master) to irreverent humor (“side piece is a gender-neutral term”), the spirited exchange was a highlight of the day. As President Laura Laing said on the thread, “I love the geekery of ASJA.” (We’ll talk about the circus freak origins another week). Cheers, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor

The Hill

What does movement journalism mean for journalism as a whole?
RJI
“The goal is always going to be with the people”
Movement journalism. It didn’t yet have the name, but still, it was there in practice when Ida B. Wells’ name was first placed on the masthead on the Memphis Free Speech in 1892.
Wells, a Black journalist who meticulously reported on lynchings across the American South, sought justice and truth when many journalists wouldn’t.

Axios
Several women have been tapped to lead some of the country's largest newsrooms over the past year — a promising sign of progress for an industry that's typically been slow to accept change and embrace diversity.

Conversations with friends
Columbia Journalism Review
American media is not, and never has been, diverse. Every so often the industry releases reports to assess the precise proportions of its homogeneity.
