In the heat of last September, I called Estelle Erasmus with a hidden agenda. I'd never met her, but I had a feeling that she would be the person to lead this spring's New York conference. She was a productive New York area freelancer and a long-time ASJA member who had a long tenure working as an editor with various publications.
More than an hour into our call, I made the ask. Estelle accepted the role of conference chair, with only slight hesitation — and a brief comparison of our sun signs.
What has resulted for ASJA has been a vibrant six months of conference planning, of pulling together amazing talent, of brainstorming fresh ideas (early riser sessions!) and of planning a seamless event. Our registration numbers already look like it's been a huge success — one of the biggest conferences in recent years.

Member Name: Susan Johnston Taylor
Success Story: Assignments for Parade Magazine
How I landed the gig: The first year I attended the ASJA conference an editor from Parade Magazine was participating in personal pitch. I went to the conference but I didn't get one of her meeting slots. However, all attendees got a detailed description of what she wanted, so I pitched her the week after the conference saying that I have been at the conference too (otherwise, I’m not sure that a completely blind pitch would have gotten her attention).

At this point, we’ve all seen the disturbing video of a passenger being forcibly removed from a United flight. It was a customer service fail of epic proportions.
As a freelancer, consultant or small-business owner, it’s imperative to keep outstanding customer service top of mind. We rely on referrals and positive reviews, and customer service is often the deciding factor in whether a client raves about us and ultimately recommends our services or says, “Meh.”

You got the assignment, filed the story and cashed the check.
What now?
Get a repeat assignment, of course.
Most freelancers will attest that while getting a second assignment is definitely easier than getting the first, far too many clients end up being one-offs, and second assignments never happen.
How can you ensure that the editor who gave you that first assignment will give you a second, third and more? Here are some ways to keep those relationships going and those checks rolling in.

The Content Standard by Skyword
What I’ve learned from watching content marketing find its footing in storytelling is that content creation doesn’t have to be all that different from creative nonfiction. What’s more, it doesn’t have to adhere to snackable blog posts and listicles. For established freelance writers who operate their own websites and maintain active blog presences, long-form content like Wallace’s “Consider the Lobster” or The New York Times‘ “Tomato Can Blues” can seem not only superfluous, but irrelevant. When you’re a full-time independent contractor with kids and a small business to keep on track generating income, how in the world are you supposed to find time to write anything even half as long as “Consider the Lobster” if you don’t know there’s any tangible ROI to it?

Columbia Journalism Review
The blowback has been intense to President Donald Trump’s decision to back a congressional rollback of recently adopted FCC privacy rules — rules designed to protect web users from the reuse or sale of their online traffic histories without their explicit consent. Yet, while the revision has made news for being extremely unpopular and inspiring crowdfunded campaigns to buy Congressional browsing records, the changes have implications for media companies far beyond the current news cycle.
