ASJA
You’ve seen the announcements and ASJA magazine articles and email blasts, and if you haven’t registered for the ASJA NYC conference, the time is absolutely, 100 percent now. Less than a week from now, the best freelancers in the country will be hobnobbing with editors, sharing fab business tips, pitching new clients and enjoying our new home in NYC’s hip downtown. Remember, we have panels based on four tracks: content marketing, journalism, books and freelance writing. (See the full agenda here.) Register now and meet us in NYC!

If you haven't already downloaded the #ASJA2019 conference app, what are you waiting for? Here's what you'll get out of it:
- Create your own customized schedule. Forget flipping through a program to figure out where you're going and when. Using the app, you can get organized in advance, choosing the sessions you want to attend and consulting the floor plan so you don't get lost. Speaker bios are accessible via the app, too.
- Network with other conference attendees. Whether you want to connect with other writers, speakers or potential clients, the app allows you to message people as soon as you download it. Set up meetings, say hello or follow up after a conversation in the hallway!

In 2010, author, speaker, journalist and consultant Judah Freed moved from his home state of Colorado to Hawaii and founded Hoku House so he could publish his own books. In 2016, he made an exception, editing and publishing The Patient, the Doctor and the Bill Collector: A Medical Debt Survival Guide. It struck a collective nerve, initiating a national conversation among thought leaders, garnering the attention of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and resulting in another Hoku House title, End Medical Debt (2018). Hoku House also will publish Freed’s forthcoming book, Making Global Sense: Grounded Hope for the 21st Century.

The New York Times
Lyra McKee was one of a new generation of journalists covering the renewed unrest in Northern Ireland, often working as web-based and precariously funded freelancers. Ms. McKee spoke of her generation as the Ceasefire Babies — “those too young to remember the worst of the terror because we were either in nappies or just out of them when the Provisional I.R.A. cease-fire was called … We were the Good Friday Agreement generation, destined not to witness the horrors of war but to reap the spoils of peace. The spoils never seemed to reach us.”
She is believed to be the first journalist killed in the line of work in Britain since 2001, when Northern Ireland investigative reporter Martin O’Hagan was murdered by Protestant terrorists.
Donations may be sent to the GoFundMe page set up for her mother, Joan, for whom McKee was a caregiver.

The Writer
The adults around the table are fragile — 12 eggs outside their carton. They’re here to write, but they’re afraid they’re not good enough. As the instructor, I start out reassuring. “Compared to the fiction students next door, you’re out from behind the eight ball. Nobody will ever say, ‘That couldn’t happen,’ because it already did.”
That’s the gift of nonfiction: the surety that the stories are real, and the weight that lived experience imparts to narrative. The task, then, is to write nonfiction that’s compelling, and that’s the skill new writers often find toughest to master.

Any freelancer with a steady stream of work will tell you they’d never go back to a staff job, if it weren’t for this one thing: Getting paid as a freelancer is often more challenging than the work itself.
Unlike employees that benefit from bi-monthly direct deposits, freelancers often have to invoice for each project. In a perfect world, we’d receive payment upon invoicing or within the term stipulated in our contracts.

Creative Boom
Going freelance? Then you now run your own business: congratulations! But many creative freelancers don’t really think in those terms. In fact, they often don’t like to think about money at all.
It’s a lifestyle thing. You love your work, and getting paid for it remains secondary. But that’s a shame. Because as a result, you may be undercharging, and losing out on thousands, even tens of thousands, every year.

Writer's Digest
If you’re a writer, you’ve likely experienced the other-worldly “flow state” that arises on rare and precious occasions, when you feel a sense of oneness between person and pen, and the words flow forth from your fingers as if your soul itself is dictating.
More often, there’s writer’s block. Every author, journalist, blogger, and poet must learn to hurdle this dreaded obstacle at some point in their career. Few realize that there’s a simple and ancient cure: meditation.
