Greetings and salutations! Hope everyone had an excellent virtual conference. I enjoyed the opportunity to connect with some new people, and to get some great tips and ideas to help me make my freelance writing and editing business more productive, lucrative and efficient (fingers crossed). One of my favorite takeaways was from content marketing track keynote speaker Britta Waller Melton, who wants to know what sites prospective collaborators binge on to find “inspiration, innovation and coolness.” I’ve never had a potential client ask what inspires me – only what I’ve done. And likewise, I haven’t thought to ask the question of anyone else. On a fun personal note, I ran into a former colleague of nearly 20 years ago in Jennifer Goforth Gregory’s content marketing track Facebook group, which just goes to show you never know who you’ll meet in ASJA. On which note, word on the street is we’ll be back in New York next year, so it’ll be nice to meet virtual ASJA friends in person. Cheers, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor

Confidential: President's Report
ASJA
We mostly notice machines for what they do — dry our laundry, print a document, take us somewhere by land, sea or air. The details of why those machines work may be interesting, but it’s difficult for each of us to master all of the information needed to understand the hows. This week at Confidential, President Laura Laing gives us a look under the hood at how some changes are being made at ASJA. Read more at ASJA Confidential.

Pro-Act Update: White House Edition
ASJA
The White House, which called on the Senate to pass the PRO Act, established the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment. “The Task Force will be dedicated to mobilizing the federal government’s policies, programs, and practices to empower workers to organize and successfully bargain with their employers.” They will make recommendations within 180 days on how existing policies and programs can promote worker organizing and collective bargaining in the federal government, and will address new policies needed to achieve their mission. There is no specific mention of the ABC test, but President Biden campaigned on making the ABC test the basis for labor, employment and tax law. Read more here.

March 11, 2021, was the one-year anniversary of when the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic and the entire world came to a standstill. It was also the date of President Joe Biden’s first prime-time address, where he announced that all adult Americans would be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine beginning on May 1 (the date was later moved up to April 19).

How COVID-19 has accelerated encroachments on media freedom
Journalism.co.uk
Writing in Foreign Policy at the end of June 2020, Sushma Raman, executive director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, reflected on "the global deterioration of press freedom," adding that "an increasing number of attacks on the media have come in places where press freedom was once enshrined."
One of the primary reasons for attacking, or threatening, journalists is to try and influence their reporting.

For political reporters, there will be no 'return to normal'
Nieman Reports
Back in October of last year, seven months into the pandemic, life in Delaware, Ohio, a fast-growing exurb outside Columbus, wasn’t exactly normal, but it sure seemed close. A few weeks before the presidential election, maskless people strolled through the center of town, ducking into restaurants and shops as they enjoyed a sunny fall afternoon.

Exclusive: Twitter launches national campaign to boost local news

Twitter will launch a major advertising and social media campaign urging people to follow local journalists and support their work.
Why it matters: While Twitter is a platform designed to give everyone a voice, journalists from national outlets tend to have an outsized presence.
