Thank You for a Great Conference!

ASJA
It takes a great deal of effort to put on a two day conference — with expert panels, mastermind groups, and one-on-one meetings with editors and agents. Thank you to our conference organizers, Jodi Helmer and Carolyn Crist, as well as our incredible keynote speakers. Thank you also to all of our volunteers, Erin O’Donnell and Jeanette Hurt, our Client Connections team, and those who planned and moderated panels. And we can't forget our staff — Holly, Patrick, Gemma, and our two Jameses — who do all of the behind-the-scenes work. We're already focused on next year's event. Until then, please share your gratitude with our hard-working conference team!

With the departures of long-time editor, Aleigh Acerni, and publications chair, Laura Laing, ASJA is seeking an editor for its print magazine, as well as a new, volunteer publications chair. The magazine editor is a paid, contracted position. Applicants should have at least five years of experience writing for major print publications as a staff member or freelancer, as well as at least five years of experience as a magazine editor or associate editor. The publications chair (volunteer) oversees all three ASJA publications: ASJA Magazine, ASJA Confidential, and ASJA Weekly. Get the details and spruce up your resume/CV!

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are small private groups that meet on a special section of ASJA’s Forum to discuss a particular topic. This session, we'll be learning about cookbooks, SEO and more. Reserve your spot starting May 14 at noon Eastern standard time. Only 12 spots are available for each SIG and they'll be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so mark your calendar now. Registration will be open for only ten days! Learn about the upcoming sessions (and register on May 14) here.

Why join ASJA? What’s in it for me? Fair questions, and the stock answer — that all those benefits of membership are a bargain — doesn’t tell the full story.
Whether they realize it or not, members are most successful when they commit to a long-term relationship with ASJA, not just a one-night stand. In fact, a successful relationship probably would be better characterized as a partnership instead of the uncomfortable feeling that you’re just another member of another organization. And like any good relationship, a member’s tenure with ASJA works best when both sides contribute to its success.

Everyone knows that the best way to finally write a book is to set challenging goals and stick to them. Sick kid or leaky roof, let nothing deter you from your 1,000 words per day. Wait, that sounds kind of hard. Sorry! The real best way to tackle it is by being … gentle on yourself. A few perfect sentences a day, no more no less. Easy does it. Hmmm, but that might take a while. How about you just let yourself write when the mood or inspiration strike? You’re bound to be in the mood and inspired a lot, right?

What would happen if news media struggling to survive applied the productivity mantra “What gets measured gets done” to the sources they quote?
Business research, Hollywood sales data and anecdotal evidence from the news industry itself all suggest it’s worth a try.
In many western democracies — the U.S., the U.K. and Canada included — most major news organizations continue to feature three or four times as many men as experts or sources as they do women.

As a freelancer, you must constantly make decisions about the projects you accept and out of those, the ones you prioritize. For example, as web designer should you take on a client who asks you build an entire website from scratch, or a gig where you just need to build a set of simple landing pages?

One of the most visible aspects of the changing job landscape is the rise of the gig economy. Whether it’s by choice or necessity, more and more of us are working as freelancers — sometimes juggling multiple jobs at the same time. According to a 2016 report by the McKinsey Global Institute, approximately 162 million workers — or around or 20 to 30% of the working-age population — in the U.S. and Western Europe work as independent contractors.
