Member’s Day, May 18, will receive a stellar kickoff with keynoter Aimee Ross. A nationally award-winning educator, Aimee has just released her first book, Permanent Marker: A Memoir (KiCam). Her passion for learning and teaching about the Holocaust has led to fellowships and study tours; online and print published study guides and lessons; and numerous presentations, both nationally and internationally. While Amy won’t reveal exactly what she’s going to talk about, she did offer juicy hints and advice.

Special Interest Groups, or SIGs, are small groups of 12 or fewer that meet on a private area of the forum and discuss a particular topic for four weeks. We are looking for leaders for the summer session, June 25 – July 22. Past topics have included history writing, SEO, six-figure freelancing, pitch perfection and more.
Leaders don't have to be an expert in the topic. In fact, some leaders select that topic because it's an interest they want to pursue and network around. They simply need to be active facilitators who can start and keep conversations going.
If you're interested in leading a SIG this summer (or later this year) please email SIG Wrangler Kate Silver.

More than a dozen members vied for the victory in this year's Member's Day Contest, generously reaching out to their editor, agent, and other contacts and inviting them to Client Connections. After registration closed last week, we crunched the numbers and are pleased to announce that the hard-working recipient of this year's prize of a free Member's Day is Kristine Hansen. Really, though, everyone's a winner, thanks to the dozens of clients who've agreed to meet one-on-one with ASJA members at the conference. Thanks so much to all who participated!

The New York Times
Seventeen years after nearly 3,000 freelance journalists filed a class-action lawsuit (joined by ASJA) claiming copyright infringement by some of the country’s biggest publishers, the checks are finally in the mail. The 2,500 writers (including many ASJA members) who made it through the tortuous legal process will start receiving their pieces of a settlement totaling $9 millions this week.

Of all the effects created by writers, none is more important or elusive than that quality called “voice.” Good writers, it is said, want to “find” their voice. And they want that voice to be “authentic,” a word from the same root as “author” and “authority.” If the writer went on a quest to find a sacred object or special power, it might very well be called “voice.”
n the digital age, voice is more important than ever. Writers need to develop their own “brand,” an identity that suggests reliability and quality.

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, dozens of news organizations are joining forces to promote high-quality journalism.
The point behind the ad campaign? Strength in numbers.
The ads encourage readers to check out a wide variety of news outlets, not just one. The effort has been spearheaded by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, known as UNESCO, and the creative agency Droga5.
