Our next Virtual Client Connections event will be held the week of June 5 and editors from Grist.org, Psychology Today, Men's Health and Stoke Group (agency recruiting for Adobe projects) have already signed up. Check out the Client Connections webpage to learn about each editor and check for new editors. Note that registration for the June VCC will be first-come, first-serve instead of a lottery. Be sure to read the VCC FAQ’s for detailed information on the process.
The first-come, first-serve registration for the April mini-VCC will open on Tuesday, May 23 at 2 p.m. Eastern and the link for the registration will be posted on the VCC website when it is live. Please note that you can only sign up for one editor the first 24 hours of registration. If an editor’s spots are filled up, Waiting List Only will be added to their name in the registration dropdown box. On Wednesday, May 24 at 2 pm Eastern (after the registration has been open 24 hours to give all members a chance to sign up for one editor), members can sign up for additional appointments with editors that still have open appointments. Since you do not need a password to sign up through the Google Form, members who are unable to be online at this time can have a friend or family member sign up for them.
Note that you cannot sign up for a specific time due to the increased volunteer effort this would require. However, if you are assigned to a time that you are unable to meet, we will do our best to find another member to switch with you.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email JenniferGregory@nc.rr.com.

Over the years, I’ve written/co-authored and/or ghosted 16 books, all published in the traditional way — with a signed contract from a well-known publishing house and an advance. Once I handed in my completed manuscript, my work was more or less done, except for any interviews the publishing house might arrange. This year I stepped into the brave new world of self, aka “indie,” publishing. What I learned right away was that completing a manuscript is only Step One. The rest could fill a book — and, in fact, does, in the recently released Publishing Architect’s Blueprint: Self-Publishing Fundamentals, which covers everything from manuscript preparation to correctly pricing the work to choosing the distribution channels that will make the book available internationally and much more.

The WRITER
After years of false starts and failures, I recently finished the first draft of my novel.
When I said I wrote it, I meant hand-wrote it, longhand, using inexpensive fountain pens and lined journals.
I know what you’re thinking. Who in the 21st century deliberately chooses pen and paper to write fiction over a word processor?
Here’s a partial list: Joe Hill, J. K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, Danielle Steel, Peter Straub.
After having done it myself, I know a bit about why a writer would choose this old-school method.

Stories, the collections of vertical photos and videos usually shared for 24 hours, originated on Snapchat, but the format can now be found on Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and even WhatsApp.
"We’re moving to a world where visual statuses are relevant,” said Nusaiba Mubarak, engagement producer, TRT World, speaking at RTE’s Mojocon event in Ireland, explaining that “visual statuses” is the term she uses to refer to what others would call “snaps.”

I’ve given a lot of thought to what I love about freelance writing, if only because for the past several years, my old elementary school has invited me to speak on the topic at Career Day. I tell the kids about the flexible hours, working in my pajamas, and not having a boss telling me what to do. They certainly like the sound of that. I tell them about some of the brands I write for, many of which are tech brands they recognize, and that always impresses. But they really become engaged when I tell them about how I first fell in love with storytelling.

Hurricane Alex arrived early. Just a category-one storm, it wasn’t very powerful as hurricanes go. When it made landfall in the Azores, its winds had already dwindled to 63 mph, which meant that technically, it was no longer even a hurricane. What made Alex unusual was not its speed, but its timing: The storm formed in January of last year, long before the official start of hurricane season, which is June 1. Rare events like Alex pose a challenge for the media and for scientists: When can climate change be mentioned as a contributing factor to an event?

When NPR's David Folkenflik was growing up in the Southern California town of Laguna Beach, he would occasionally visit an enormous newsstand where readers could find almost anything they wanted to read.
The Economist was next to Time. The surfer magazines were next to the tattoo magazines. The fake or dubious news — the National Enquirers of the world — were also in their own slots, somewhere in the vicinity of People and Us Weekly.

You search for, pitch to and nurture prospects all the time for your freelance business, and it’s always a drag.
No matter what you do, prospects always seem to go for your competitor. But you’re not alone. Marketers agree that prospecting is the most difficult part of the sales process.
If you want to start getting your fair share of clients from your efforts, then you need to understand a few reasons prospects choose your competitor in the first place.
