With a packed house, a diverse and intriguing lineup of speakers, a cool, intimate hotel near the new One World Trade Center building and the 9/11 Tribute Museum and a new app that helped link it all together, #ASJA2019 was a resounding success.
“This conference felt more connected, contained, and up-to-the-minute than previous conferences,” says ASJA member Jennie Helderman (@jenniehelderman). “The smaller hotel offered much opportunity for interaction — we met other members coming and going, we ate breakfast together, all rode the same elevators and so forth. The app gets stars for linking people while providing essential and helpful information.”
And don’t even get her started on the speakers. “The ‘State of Freelancing’ keynote was exactly what we need to hear,” Helderman continues. “It’s essential information for us individually and was right on target,” also lending strength to ASJA’s position as the voice of freelancers. “The issues addressed by these speakers are central to our purpose."

Many salaried workers dream of independence. This applies especially to young millennials. And for good reasons. The freedom to work from anywhere in the world, choose your own working hours, handpick projects that match your interests, and charge a fair price you actually deserve, trumps any corporate job in the eyes of many.

In what appears to be an unprecedented move, the White House revoked the press passes of a significant chunk of the Washington press corps because they didn’t meet a new standard, according to Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank. Under the new rules, rolled out earlier this year, in order to qualify for the highest level of access — known as a “hard pass” — journalists had to be present in the White House for at least 90 days out of a 180-day period.

As you work to grow your small business or freelancing, you're probably going to work with an increasing number of clients. While this is a great thing (more clients = more revenue, of course!) it can also means a lot more administrative work.
To keep things organized, and the cash flowing in, you'll need a way to keep track of those many clients and projects, invoice each of them on time, manage your tax obligations and, in some cases, chase down your checks.

A writer of color is the label that currently defines my literary persona. Whether I like it or not, that’s who I am in the eyes of many in the writing community. Am I a writer of color? What color exactly?
Born in Amman, Jordan, a fairly homogeneous city where we called ourselves Jordanians, Arabs, I never thought of myself as any color. I’m not white, brown or black. I was what I was. I had to fly thousands of miles to the U.S. to discover my brownness.

The freelance/gig economy is booming in numbers. That's certainly a good thing as more and more employers start favoring the external pros over the in-house hires. At the same time, more people are recognizing the appeal of freelance work and start picking up side gigs at least part-time. But, this increased interest also translated to skyrocketing competition for work.
