With 60+ clients and more than 200 ASJA members, things can get crazy during Client Connections, held in the Sheraton Times Square ballroom on May 18. Here are some tips to make the most of the event:
- Prepare for your meetings by carefully reading what your clients are looking for. You’ll have nine minutes to dazzle, so draft an “elevator speech” in advance.
- Know where you’re going and when: You should have received an email on May 11 with your list of appointments and clients’ table numbers. At the conference registration desk, you’ll get a hard copy as well. Keep that list handy, and show up at least five minutes before your meeting.
- If your client shows up late or not at all, keep your cool. It happens! We’ll do our best to connect you after the conference. Please remember: A small army of volunteer ASJA members runs this event, and we’ve worked hard to plan it — be patient and polite with us!
- Respect the bell! That’s your cue to wrap things up quickly so the next member can begin their meeting on time. Don’t wait for a tap on the shoulder from our volunteers!
- Disappointed that you didn’t get a meeting with someone? Most editors stay for ASJA’s cocktail reception afterwards, so plan to introduce yourself there. And don’t be shy to ask a fellow ASJA member who did snag an appointment with your choice client to share contact information. We are a generous bunch!

Looking for a getaway to southern California, Florida, or Washington D.C.? How about a 90-minute consultation on book writing and publishing with an established novelist? Or if you’re in the mood for fun, what about an insider’s trip to the Indy 500 or seats to Broadway’s Beautiful and a backstage tour or lunch with the producers?
All of these — and more — will be available on ASJA’s first-ever Charitybuzz online auction, to benefit the ASJA Educational Foundation in its 70th Anniversary fundraising efforts.

Want to stay connected to ASJA after the conference? One great way to do that is to lead a Special Interest Group, or SIG, which is a small group that meets privately on the forum for four weeks. There's no set schedule, so you can log on and chime in when it's convenient for you.
Right now, we're seeking volunteers for the summer session, June 25 – July 22. We're open to just about any topic, whether it's time management, structuring your novel, finding your niche or other ideas. Learn more here.
If you're interested in leading a SIG this summer (or later this year) please email SIG Wrangler Kate Silver.

The WRITER
That the print media world is in free fall is hardly man-bites-dog news. For years now, publications have been folding, downsizing and going digital-only at an alarming rate. In the past 16 years, death knells have tolled for once-iconic magazines like House & Garden, Gourmet, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Mademoiselle, and in just the last year, print editions of More, Self, and Lucky Peach were shuttered. Meanwhile, editors arrive and depart with revolving-door speed, and writers’ payments stagnate or threaten to nose dive.

While social media is a wonderful resource for freelancers to promote their work, it can be exhausting to constantly stay plugged in and try to stand out in such a noisy world. Plus, in light of Facebook's privacy issues, many social media users are jumping ship — afraid of how the platforms are misusing their personal data.

American Press Institute
When journalists talk about how they wish the public could recognize good reporting from bad reporting or even fakery, the subject often turns to whether the audience has the right skills. The discussion usually falls under the heading of “news literacy,” a body of work that typically involves a curriculum supervised by schools, heavily oriented toward teaching young people “critical thinking skills” as they consume news.
