Our next Virtual Client Connections event will be held the week of June 5 and editors from Grist.org, Psychology Today, Men's Health, Everyday Health, Lonely Planet at Debbie Carter, and Stoke Group (agency recruiting for Adobe projects) have already signed up. Check out the Client Connections webpage to learn about each editor and check for new editors. Note that registration for the June VCC will be first-come, first-serve instead of a lottery. Be sure to read the VCC FAQ’s for detailed information on the process.
The first-come, first served registration for the June mini-VCC will open on Tuesday, May 23 at 2 pm Eastern and the link for the registration will be posted on the VCC website when it is live. Please note that you can only sign up for one editor the first 24 hours of registration. If an editor’s spots are filled up, Waiting List Only will be added to their name in the registration dropdown box. On Wednesday, May 24 at 2 pm Eastern (after the registration has been open 24 hours to give all members a chance to sign up for one editor), members can sign up for additional appointments with editors that still have open appointments. Since you do not need a password to sign up through the Google Form, members who are unable to be online at this time can have a friend or family member sign up for them.
Note that you cannot sign up for a specific time due to the increased volunteer effort this would require. However, if you are assigned to a time that you are unable to meet, we will do our best to find another member to switch with you.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email JenniferGregory@nc.rr.com.
Registration for our summer SIGs begins May 22 at noon Eastern. The session will run June 5 through July 2 and we've got some great groups in store, including:
- From Journalist to Novelist: Developing the fiction writer in you, Leader Debbie Blumberg
- Writing for Trade Magazines, Leader Robert Bittner
- Overcoming the Doldrums, Leader Kristin Baird Rattini
To learn more, visit the SIG page here. The registration link will go live when registration has begun. Registration is first-come, first-served, and is expected to fill up quickly.

Every so often the question pops up on ASJA’s Forum: “I got a contract that said something about waiving ‘moral rights.’ What are those, exactly, and should I be concerned?”
Actually, yes, and probably, increasingly more so. But even trying to define moral rights can be daunting, although Ronald B. Standler, PhD, JD, in his compellingly titled “Moral Rights of Authors in the USA," pretty much clarifies it for the jargon-impaired. He describes moral rights as “a bundle of legal rights for the protection of the honor and reputation of the author.”

Approximately 34 percent of the U.S. workforce — or 53 million Americans — earn a living working as freelancers, according to the "Freelancing in America: A National Survey of the New Workforce" report. Despite this huge number, freelance workers are still not protected by law. However, all of this is set to change as the Freelance Isn't Free Act (FIFA) takes effect in New York City. Employers and freelancers need to understand the extent of the law before they are affected by it.

Most email newsletters, even if they’re fortunate enough to sidestep spam filters, sit idle and unopened in recipients’ inboxes. Newsletters dedicated to the latest media-industry chatter, reporting resources, and news stories have proliferated, offering journalists an essential resource for reporting. However, there are a plethora of options, and all newsletters are not created equal.

Pitching is a skill that all journalists should master, whether freelancing is your main source of income or you're a student aiming to get a foot in the door and make better use of the portfolio acquired during your degree. A strong pitch should sell a specific story, rather than just an idea, and it should also explain why the article or project should be published now, and why you are the best person to write it.
