The other day, my 3-year-old said to me, “Mama, we need to get you new shoes. We’ll get them at the shoe store in the muffin aisle.” Frankly, I think a muffin aisle would vastly improve any shoe store. That which is unexpected and seemingly doesn’t fit can often make something so much better. What’s been the muffin aisle in a shoe store of your writing – or reading – life? A niche you never thought would fit you, but you made it work? A fantastic twist or unexpected character in a book that stayed with you? A new skill you never planned to learn? Think about it, then go get yourself a muffin… and maybe a new pair of shoes. You deserve it.
Cheers, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor

Virtual Ed Committee Seeks Speakers
ASJA
The Virtual Education Committee is hard at work on filling our agenda for the year with more sessions that would be of interest to our community. We’re looking for a speaker who'd to take part in a panel on "Writing about what's happening in your own backyard".
We're looking for someone who has extensive experience in writing/covering local stories (and ideally has written a book about a story in their own backyard). Projected date for the panel is mid-late fall. For more information, contact Natasha Serafimovska at contact@serafimovska.com

What is the 'product' of journalism?
Poynter
For a long time, journalists thought the “product” they produced was articles. It isn’t and it never was. For most of the 20th century, the product was the physical newspaper. The product was double-sided paper thrown at the doorstep every morning. Reporters produced articles and they were packaged inside the product, like so many chips in a bag.

The ongoing information war over Ukraine
Columbia Journalism Review
Recently, a pair of leaks to the press shined a fresh light on the extent of US assistance to Ukraine in its war against Russia. On Wednesday, Julian E. Barnes, Helene Cooper, and Eric Schmitt, of the New York Times, reported, citing “senior American officials,” that the US has provided Ukrainian officials with locational details of Russian movements that they have subsequently combined with their own information and used to target and kill Russian generals — a flow of intelligence, the Times wrote, that “has few precedents.”
