Our next Virtual Client Connections event will be held the week of June 5 and editors from Grist.org, Psychology Today, Men's Health, Everyday Health, Lonely Planet, Debbie Carter (Waverly Place Literary Agency), and Stoke Group (agency recruiting for Adobe projects) have already signed up. Check out the Client Connections webpage to learn about each editor and check for new editors. Note that registration for the June VCC will be first-come, first-served instead of a lottery. Be sure to read the VCC FAQ’s for detailed information on the process.
The first-come, first-served registration for the June mini-VCC will open on Tuesday, May 23 at 2 pm Eastern and the link for the registration will be posted on the VCC website when it is live. Please note that you can only sign up for one editor the first 24 hours of registration. If an editor’s spots are filled up, Waiting List Only will be added to their name in the registration dropdown box. On Wednesday, May 24 at 2 pm Eastern (after the registration has been open 24 hours to give all members a chance to sign up for one editor), members can sign up for additional appointments with editors that still have open appointments. Since you do not need a password to sign up through the Google Form, members who are unable to be online at this time can have a friend or family member sign up for them.
Note that you cannot sign up for a specific time due to the increased volunteer effort this would require. However, if you are assigned to a time that you are unable to meet, we will do our best to find another member to switch with you.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email JenniferGregory@nc.rr.com.
Sessions will run June 5 through July 2 and we've got some great groups in store, including:
- From Journalist to Novelist: Developing the fiction writer in you, Leader Debbie Blumberg
- Writing for Trade Magazines, Leader Robert Bittner
- Overcoming the Doldrums, Leader Kristin Baird Rattini
To learn more, visit the SIG page here. Registration is first-come, first-served, and is expected to fill up quickly, so sign up now!

“Git along, little dogies” and “Moo,” were some of the thoughts flitting through my mind as we were herded towards our timed-to-the-minute Client Connections appointments during the May 5 Member’s Day of the ASJA NYC conference. Yet in spite of the potential for chaos, the meetings ran like clockwork with people showing up and leaving per their designated schedule. In fact — with an eye to the Saturday’s “Writing About Parenting: Editors Tell All” panel — the expression “smooth as a baby’s bottom” pretty sums up how the conference went for the entire two days.
Attendance was up over 38 percent from last year, according to ASJA President Sherry Beck Paprocki.
In addition to all-around kudos for the hard work and dedication of chair Estelle Erasmus, innovations and add-ons such as the “early risers” programs, and the “multiple keynotes” received great reviews. Along with an emphasis on diversity in panels and keynotes, this year also saw a large number of students (aka future ASJA members), many of whom were spurred to attendance by participating faculty panelists. Book sales also increased more than 10 percent, another bottom-line boost to members and speakers with titles at the conference bookstore.

ASJA offers so many opportunities for members to connect with potential clients and with each other, which hopefully lands us all more work. We'll feature member success stories each week. Share your success stories with us! Contact marijke@medhealthwriter.com.
Member Name: Cynthia J. Drake
Success Story: Assignments for Costco Connection
How I landed the gig: I listened to an archived recording of a virtual pitch slam featuring Costco Connection editor Tod Jones (a Virtual Pitch slam features freelancers calling in, teleconference-style, and pitching ideas to an editor; he or she gives them immediate feedback, and everyone listening in gains valuable information from the process). I pitched Tod a travel story idea shortly afterward. He was very responsive and great to work with -- I now have another pitch under consideration for an upcoming issue.
Net result: $650
Comment: I had let my ASJA membership lapse for a few years, and was convinced by friend and mentor Susan Johnston Taylor to rejoin in 2017. I was happy to see that the organization had really taken steps to innovate since the last time I was a member.

With higher-quality apps and a larger developer base, iOS is undoubtedly the favorite operating system for mobile journalists in the Western world. As Eliot Fitzroy, founder of Epic Tutorials, explained at Mojocon last week, broadcast-quality content can indeed be produced on both Android and iOS, but the fragmentation of Android has made it much more difficult for developers to work with this operating system.
