ASJA has launched its Crisis Coverage Awards: COVID-19 Edition, the first GLOBAL awards program recognizing writers for their coverage of the COVID-19 outbreak. WRITERS WORLDWIDE may find more information and rules and submit their work here. Submissions will be accepted until July 3.
WRITERS are invited to submit English-language articles, including self-nominations, published between January 1 and June 30, 2020. Teams of leading journalists will judge submissions based on quality of writing and reporting and whether new information was provided or a fresh perspective was given to a familiar concept. A portion of all entry fees will be contributed to ASJA’s Writers Emergency Assistance Fund (WEAF), and winners will receive cash prizes. ASJA will feature winning articles in press releases and social media posts.
“The aim of the awards is to bring greater visibility to this important time in our world history,” says Milton C. Toby, JD, president of ASJA. “I applaud Janine Latus and the ASJA Crisis Coverage Awards Committee for developing such a timely program to showcase the work of writers globally.” READ MORE

The annual ASJA Writing Awards program runs on volunteer power, so special thanks go out to Salley Shannon and Janine Latus, co-chairs of the awards committee, and to the dozens of judges who invest time in selecting the best of the best. Thanks, too, to Tami Kamin Meyer, Jennifer Billock and Susan Johnston Taylor, who posted daily announcements on social media. Many thanks to all involved!

The Writer
For the last two years, I have worked on a book. When I sent the copy edited manuscript to my editor – the last step before the Word doc becomes an advance reader’s copy – I expected to feel something. Instead, I returned to my day gig copy editing blog posts for a major consumer magazine without so much as whoop or Michael Jordan-inspired fist pump.

As I stood in my balcony on the morning of March 25, I observed the road, which until the previous evening was host to vehicles, hawkers and pedestrians. The adorable dog of our housing society — we call her Sweetie — sat in the middle of the road with no fear or anticipation of speeding cars. Her son, Bholu, who loved to rest in the shade of a car, sat next to her. Both seemed deep in contemplation, whispering to each other, “Where is everybody today?”

The feast or famine aspect of freelancing doesn’t sit well with most people. Sometimes it can seem like a ton of work is coming in. Other times, it can be stressful as you struggle to just break even for the month. Getting consistent gigs as a freelancer can seem next to impossible.
I’m not a big fan of the fluctuating income aspect of freelancing either. But, I’ve been able to make a good living freelancing full time by landing contracts with clients who are able to give me consistent work.
