Green with envy, that is, for those of us who, for one reason or another, were unable to attend #ASJANY2018, a very special event on many levels. But sometimes the next best thing to being there is hearing firsthand accounts and listening to the tapes when they become available in June (watch this space for more information). So in the spirit of spring and flies on the wall — who hopefully have the good sense to go outside before my shoe and/or cats get them — check out these “overheard” comments and highlights.

Thanks to everyone who filled out the Conference Survey — feedback is the best way to improve future events!
To that end, we'd like to hear about your Client Connections experiences: How were your meetings? If this was your first time, what did you think of the event format? Did you learn anything that you'd like to share with other members? Have suggestions on how to make it better? Have you already gotten work? We want to hear it all; email Client Connections chair Wendy Helfenbaum at wendy@taketwoproductions.ca so she can compile a feedback report. Thanks!

The weather held up and the ASJA Gala held on May 17 from 6-8 p.m. at the Steelcase Penthouse space overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park was a huge hit. Guests mingled with editors, agents and other industry VIPs, while they consumed bespoke cocktails, steak tidbits, crab cakes, coconut shrimp and more. The bespoke cocktails were the Golden Gala (grapefruit juice and vodka) and the 7.0 (a gin, lemon and sage drink). The photos of the event are on the ASJA facebook page (under photos). A big thank you to Patchen Barrs who was on photo duty that evening!

Writing a memoir means searching for what one has forgotten. It is easy enough to remember the larger outline of a time that has passed, but it is regrettably impossible to recall the minutiae that capture the very essence of that former experience. Without these particulars, the memoir falls flat, for it fails to dwell upon those fleeting and seemingly insignificant moments that paradoxically capture the substance of what one is trying to replicate.

The gig economy is booming, with up to a third of the U.S. workforce now working as freelancers. While there are many perks to freelancing, most freelancers are attracted to the fact that they can choose both when they work and what jobs they work on. However, the freelancer who seeks opportunities to grow will face many issues, not least of which is the challenge of securing a loan from a bank or other traditional lender.

The freelance and gig economy was supposed to create a level playing field free from traditional biases and discrimination, but that’s not how things are playing out in reality.
Recent studies have found that women Uber drivers earn 7 percent less than male drivers, while women freelancers charge lower rates, are more likely to get paid late, and are four and a half times less likely to be earning over $150,000.
