Bad writing is mainly boring writing. It can be boring because it is too confused or too logical, or boring because it is hysterical or lethargic, or boring because nothing really happens. If I give you a 400 page manuscript of an unpublished novel — something that I consider to be badly written — you may read it to the end, but you will suffer as you do.

When a reader falls in love with a new fantasy world, they can be skittish about trying something new. One of my heroes growing up (and the man who inspired me to write) was Terry Brooks and his Shannara books always outsold his other series. I was always ready for another helping!

There are authors and publishers who fear reader analytics. This has been a fact since my first presentation on "Project Crowberry" in spring 2014, since followed by Project Honeyberry, Project Apricot, Project Pomegranate and soon Project Honeydew. Reader analytics is going from strength to strength and has been featured in The New York Times and The Guardian.
