ASJA
It’s been a dynamic two years in this organization during the time that I’ve served as president. Recently, I looked back over all that has been achieved and it’s stunning to see this progress in motion. ASJA has evolved from an organization that had one conference a year to one that offers various conferences and digital connections to every one of our members across the country and Canada.

Now that the annual ASJA conference is in the rearview mirror, do you have a success story to share? Bethany Bradsher signed with an agent she met with during Client Connections. The impressive CC list spurred her on to attend the conference. Read about her success here.

The life of a freelance journalist is only getting grimmer. The money’s worse, publishers demand more rights, and the labor pool expands by the day. All of this can make it tempting to focus on finding paying work wherever we can and letting the details slide.
“Lawyers have a saying: You name the price, I’ll name the terms,” says David Lizerbram, an intellectual property attorney in San Diego. “For those of us who deal with the nitty gritty, contract terms are really where the action is. All these things really do matter.”

Poor stage lighting left two of the seven international journalists in the dark. An even worse sound system alternately emitted eardrum-splitting cracks and silence. It was an apt metaphor for the challenges these journalists face daily.
They maneuvered around the audio-visual obstacles during the May 17 “Journalism and Democracy” panel the same way they tackle more consequential ones in their home countries — with equanimity, collaboration and ingenuity, passing around one functioning mic and raising their voices to speak without amplification.

Business 2 Community
Working for yourself comes with a lot of temptations, especially if you work from home. There’s tv, website after website, and even housework to put before your actual freelancing work. Plus, when you need to do all your own marketing, accounting and the actual work, it’s easy for your work day to get derailed. You’re the boss of yourself, and you need to hold yourself accountable.

The benefits of mobile journalism (mojo) are clear: all reporters are able to harness the power of their smartphones to produce high-quality content on the go, while newsrooms can engage with audiences more frequently for less.
However, while the majority of people have a smartphone in their pocket, implementing a mojo workflow into the newsroom can be a challenge. There can be resistance from editors, fellow colleagues, and that's after you've tackled the ever-changing technology yourself and found the way to use it.

For quite a while, I was hyper focused on growing my business and paid very little attention to anything other than work. I thought I had to be working all the time to become a successful freelancer. My business grew, but my personal life suffered. I learned that to be satisfied overall, you have to devote time to both things. Otherwise, you’ll notice stress levels are high and you’re not able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
