It’s no surprise that when coronavirus forced us to cancel the ASJA 2020 Annual Writers Conference in New York City, the resourceful volunteers who make the national conference such a success found a way to help writers while we continue to social distance. After all, as freelancers, we routinely teach ourselves new skills. This summer, we will launch the ASJA 2020 Virtual Conference, held over Zoom during the months of July, August and September.

Two weeks after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, demonstrations protesting police brutality continue in cities across the country. Many of the demonstrations are peaceful. In Lexington, Kentucky, police officers joined demonstrators chanting "black lives matter." Other demonstrations have been marked by riots, looting, and hundreds of unprovoked arrests and physical attacks on journalists and demonstrators by the police using tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets.

ASJA
ASJA is a strong organization, with energetic, successful members, but we've neglected our website. After a year of discussions and research, the board selected Think33, a web developer that will help us create a new site, which will launch sometime in 2021. Thanks in no small part to members’ support and contributions to the 70th anniversary campaign, this site will feature a robust educational hub and more intuitive tools for registering for programs and applying for membership as well as WEAF grants. Stay tuned for updates!

Another new group of applicants for membership in ASJA has passed the Membership Application Committee's review and the list of prospective members has now been posted. Active members may review the list here and send any comments to James Cafiero no later than June 22. All comments will be sent to the Application Committee for consideration and will be kept confidential.

I thought my first layoff meant the end of my career. Dead on arrival when I was only 28 and still had a lot to learn. Fortunately, it wasn’t. Two years later, I marked the ominous anniversary in February by wrapping up my coverage of the Sundance Film Festival. I had plans for more festivals across the country and set my sights on Cannes, which I had never attended before.

I love reading interviews with authors. There are few things better than finding out what inspired their books, how they go about revising stories, why they made certain decisions, and more. And in this post, I've collected the answers to one of my favorite questions: "If you could share one piece of advice with other writers, what would it be?"
You might think I'd get 21 answers that say the exact same thing. But you'd be wrong if you did.

As a massive wave of protests unfolded in cities across the country after the death of George Floyd, journalists on the front lines have in many cases been targeted by police, with over 300 so far wrongfully arrested or assaulted, according to press freedom advocates.
With protests erupting in all 50 states — and some marred by looting or rioting, reporters covering the civil unrest faced it all: They’ve been injured by rubber bullets or tear gas, arrested by police and assaulted — in a few cases, even by protestors.

On March 22, one of our authors called me to ask if we had enough copies of her book in stock. Over the next three or four weeks most people would be home with the lockdown, and there would be a surge in reading and book sales, she insisted.
Sadly, the lockdown has ensured otherwise. With bookshops closed and online deliveries of books taking a backseat until recently, authors and publishers have taken a huge hit. There has been a small increase in ebook sales and readership, but with insignificant financial impact.

Freelancers and gig economy workers have always had to deal with a fair amount of uncertainty. Still, the coronavirus pandemic — with its ensuing public safety regulations — has created challenges for even the hardiest among this sector of the economy.
While many employees in impacted industries have been feeling the financial pinch due to COVID-19, freelancers and the gig economy have been left particularly vulnerable.
