“We want to give ASJA members an overview of activities underway within the organization and a preview of the exciting calendar of events planned for fiscal 2018,” says Sherry Beck Paprocki, ASJA President. “With ASJA’s 2018 fiscal year beginning July 1, the time is right to review the past and talk about the future.”
Among items on the agenda are: a review of ASJA’s recent financial audit, a membership update, insight about ASJA’s partnership with its association management company, an overview of new programming and advocacy that’s underway, important events during fiscal 2018, as well as activities involving ASJA’s Charitable Trust, which oversees WEAF and the Educational Foundation.
For those unavailable to listen in that day, the webinar will be recorded for later viewing.
The American Society of Journalists and Authors Charitable Trust announced it was awarded the esteemed Amazon Literacy Partnership grant. The Amazon Literary Partnership provides grants to innovative nonprofit literary organizations that strive not only for a lasting impact on writers' lives, but on the broader literary and publishing communities.
"ASJA highly values its continued relationship with Amazon," according to ASJA President Sherry Beck Paprocki. "Part of ASJA's goal is to educate and mentor writers with emerging voices from diverse communities and the Amazon grant provides a pathway for us to take action on that goal."

Words are the lifeblood of writers, and the ASJA is actively recruiting members interested in using their words to serve on the organization's Marketing Committee. Responsibilities can range from working with our professional staff on social media promotions, overseeing the organization's brand, writing promos for upcoming events and more.
Tami Kamin Meyer, the ASJA's newly appointed Marketing chair, is actively recruiting a few members interested in highlighting the organization's prolific programs, captivating conferences and steadfast leadership stewarding the organization. "While I am humbled and proud to have been named to this position, I am most excited about working alongside other members interested in touting this wonderful organization to the world," Tami said.
An Ohio native, Tami graduated from Capital University Law School in Columbus in 1990. She is licensed to practice law in Ohio, the Federal Courts and the US Supreme Court. Still, she would rather "write than fight," and has evolved into an oft-published freelance writer and editor whose byline has appeared in Better Homes and Gardens, The Rotarian, The National Trial Lawyers magazine and website, Ohio Magazine, Columbus Monthly and Columbus Monthly Home and Gardens, to name a few. She writes weekly for the website of Successful Business News (dot com) and twice monthly for its sister site of Progressive Law Practice (dot com). She is also Director of Marketing for a custom wood furniture manufacturer in Columbus.
Volunteering for the Marketing Committee won't be a huge tax on a member's precious time, either. "As a freelancer myself, I am completely cognizant of how valuable everyone's time is. If we collaborate together, the work will be go by faster and be a lot more fun," she said. Members interested in learning more are invited to email her at TKMwrites@gmail.com.

Virtual Pitch Slams (VPS) are one-hour interactive phone conference calls during which a moderator hosts a client, who outlines what his/her outlet is looking for from freelance writers. Then, ASJA members give live pitches by telephone, followed by constructive feedback on each story idea.
ASJA members can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Thursday, June 29 at 9:00 a.m. Eastern to get one of the pitching slots. Sign up information will be posted here. Members may also register just to listen in on the event, as they would for a Shop Talk. VPS will also be recorded and accessible via ASJA’s website shortly after the event.

I consulted the King — not the one who has permanently left the building — but Richard Lowe Jr., the self-proclaimed Writing King, who offers professional SEO-optimized blogging as well as book, magazine and content writing and coaching services. The author of over 60 books and ghostwriter of a dozen more, Richard is also a senior LinkedIn branding specialist and has crafted over 150 LinkedIn profiles for business people. He came up with these poop-busting nuggets:
- Particularly with a new or unestablished client, make sure to get between 25-50 percent upfront and state that that amount is nonrefundable. Additionally, the contract should state that either party may leave the project at any time.
- Clients can be very deceiving, especially when ghostwriting. That is, they may not know exactly what they want until you produce it and then realize they were looking for something entirely different. So make sure that they clearly understand the importance of carefully reviewing the article or book as it goes through each stage of the development process.
If you missed a session or were unable to attend the New York Conference this year, you’re in luck! ASJA has recorded sessions from both days. Buy the full package, one day, or an individual session. Please note that Friday sessions are available to members only. Purchase the recordings at ASJA’s Live Learning Center.

Anyone who has tried to read a legal document or a technical manual understands how jargon, clutter, numbers and acronyms can jumble together, undercutting meaning and frustrating even the avid reader. Writers must avoid the trap of describing complex issues in complicated prose. Clarity starts with a clear understanding of the topic you are writing about. Here are some other strategies for turning complicated facts into clear language for your audience.

Do you know how to answer that question in a way that captures the attention of the person who asked? When you only have 20 to 30 seconds to explain yourself to someone, you want to be able to do it in a way that turns a stranger into a potential client, or at least a cheerleader for your writing career. This is why mastering the elevator pitch for freelancers is vital. You’re confident in your abilities, so don’t risk clamming up, or worse, stuttering your way through an explanation when you’re face-to-face with an interested party.

The WRITER
Apparently, I’d forgotten how to write.
I was a novice news reporter with an uncommon education. After three years of law school plus another in the legal trenches, I’d ditched the law firm freeway for journalism’s bumpy road. The way I’d figured it, I’d rather illuminate than litigate.
But as I pounded out paragraphs, my editor glowered. Where I saw verse, he saw verbiage. “Jack,” he said, “lose the legalese.”

Last month, I gave my Intro to Journalism class a lecture on free speech. We talked about the rights, power and responsibilities as members of a free and independent press. The lecture ended with a lively discussion, but the part that sparked the most engagement involved the term “political correctness.”
The class came to define it as engaging in discourse in a way to minimize pushback or controversy. It was the best way of “fitting in” with certain politics. When I asked what type of politics a “politically correct” person usually has, the class pretty much unanimously answered “liberal.” But my follow-up question threw a wrench in their assumptions.
What is something conservatives are politically correct about?
Crickets.
