Snack Chats are small, moderated, online networking groups available to people registered for ASJA’s Virtual Conference. These events are one way to replace the all-important networking opportunities at the in-person conference. The virtual conference planning committee is looking for a volunteer to organize Snack Chats for the books track, which will take place in September. All volunteers get a free registration to the conference, so this is a great way to give back and get something great in return. For more details about volunteering, contact conference chair Laura Laing.

You can help. ASJA established the Writers’ Emergency Assistance Fund (WEAF) in 1982 to help writers financially when they are unable to work due to illness, disability, a natural disaster or an extraordinary professional crisis. To date, WEAF has given more than $400,000 to more than 160 writers. Won’t you help ensure that this worthy endeavor can continue by making a tax-deductible contribution? Learn more here.

Have a funny story to tell about your sister? Check out “Nickie’s Prize for Humor Writing,” a new writing competition from the University of Dayton’s Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop. Up to 20 winning writers will be awarded $300 cash prizes each for previously unpublished, humorous nonfiction essays of 1,000 words or less about their sisters. All original material will be considered, including pieces that expand on the theme, such as close friends who are like sisters.
Online submissions will be accepted through Aug. 1. Open to writers 18 years and older. Entry fee: $25. Essays will be blind-judged by a panel of established writers and humorists, with winners announced Oct. 19. Winning pieces will be published online and in a possible future book.
“In the spirit of Erma Bombeck, the tone can be humorous, absurd, even offbeat. They encourage essays from a diversity of authors of all experience levels — from new writers and bloggers to published book authors — that are funny in a smart, not schmaltzy way. Think of this as a humorous spin on The New York Times’ popular ‘Modern Love’ section,” said Teri Rizvi, workshop director.

This is sort of a big topic, because there are so many ways that writers can get paid for their writing. Many people think of writing and selling books or writing articles for magazines. But there many other ways writers can freelance as well.
For instance, they can write copy for local and national businesses. They can craft newsletters or grant proposals. That's without taking into account that many writers are well positioned to get paid to speak at live and online events and create podcasts and videos.

Project managers reach for their trusted spreadsheet templates. Marketers swear by social media scheduling tools like Sprout Social and CoSchedule. Digital systems and software power the daily work of freelancers, especially when a deadline is looming. When a freelancer feels the pressure of a due date, their trusted arsenal of tools is crucial.

The percentage of people paying for news online continues to increase — and people may even pay for more than one subscription. People worldwide blame domestic politicians most for spreading false and misleading information online. And more people than ever are getting news from Instagram, with 18- to 24-year-olds more than twice as likely as other age groups to prefer getting their news from social media.

The journalism industry has been facing a crisis for years; the COVID-19 pandemic has simply accelerated the inevitable, swelling a steady and dispiriting trickle of localized layoffs and outlet consolidations to a national deluge of pay cuts, furloughs, mass layoffs, closures, print reductions. These cutbacks threaten individual journalists and also journalism as a whole, eroding the robust coverage that is essential to a functioning democracy.
