ASJA
On Tuesday, July 7, ASJA’s first-ever Virtual Conference begins with our first session in the journalism track: a pitch slam for people looking to break into top women’s markets. The rest of the month is packed with useful content, including workshops on solutions journalism and writing for the non-mainstream media. There also will be two “ask an expert” sessions, “Find a Home for Your Op-ed/Essay” and “Find Your Story with a Narrative Whisperer.” Attendees also get access to seminar recordings and valuable networking opportunities. Don’t miss out — register today!

It’s been a helluva year at ASJA. A half-year, really. There is not a lot to say about the first six months of our current fiscal year (the last six months of 2019). It was business pretty much as usual, with meetings, WEAF applications, membership drives, budgets and planning. As things turned out, those days were the calm. The second six months brought the storm.

Here's your opportunity to read outstanding COVID-19 coverage from the past half-year and to bring attention to the best of it. The Crisis Coverage Awards Committee needs judges for a few weeks during July to read entries, talk with fellow member judges about what makes a great story and declare winners. ASJA runs on volunteer power, and this is one of the easiest and most fun ways to help. Sign up as a judge here.

ASJA
ASJA is a strong organization, with energetic, successful members, but we've neglected our website. After a year of discussions and research, the board selected Think33, a web developer, to help us create a new site, which will launch sometime in 2021. Thanks in no small part to members’ contributions to the 70th anniversary campaign, this site will feature a robust educational hub, plus more intuitive tools for registering for programs and applying for membership as well as WEAF grants. Stay tuned for updates!

Freelancing isn’t quite what it used to be. The old framework typically included one-off projects in photography, writing, transcription or a similar field amounting to part-time employment.
“Today, freelancing is way bigger,” Nick Tubis, founder of Freelanceclients.com, told Benzinga. “Freelancing is kind of like the new consultant. You can start a freelance business, and it really could be anything.”

As companies begin to hire more contract workers over full-time employees, the "gig economy" is becoming a viable option for full-time employment. However, with more freelancers, it’s harder to stand out when there’s more competition for work.
It can be especially difficult trying to land your first freelance gig. To help those who are new to the world of freelancing, we asked members of Forbes Coaches Council to share some advice for landing your first client.

While nearly every industry is facing layoffs due to the coronavirus epidemic, journalism is bearing a particular brunt. The New York Times estimated in April that 36,000 workers at news outlets had been laid off, or had their positions reduced, since the beginning of the outbreak. Legacy publications and new media alike have slashed their rosters, and national and local outlets are being forced to make difficult decisions about who will stay, and who will go.

Nonprofit news organizations, in their dependence on foundation funding and individual giving, have proved less vulnerable to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic than their for-profit counterparts. The Institute for Nonprofit News indicated in its recent index report that, so far, audiences for many nonprofit news publications are growing and over half of those surveyed reported that revenues are holding relatively steady amid the crisis.
