Last May, Kate Morgan joined ASJA as a full professional member — just in time for the 2018 Annual Conference. Since then, as a result of a pitch slam, she snagged an assignment for Woman's Day and is working on several other conference-cultivated leads as well. Along with doling out large doses of contagious enthusiasm about freelancing, Kate lets little, if any, grass grow under her feet. She graduated in 2012 with a degree in journalism from St. John's University in New York City, and as a student, she served as an intern for Billboard and Rolling Stone. A freelancer since 2016, she's gathered no moss but has acquired some impressive clips, including New York Mag's Science of Us, CNN, USA Today, The Slate, The Washington Post, O Magazine and others.

ASJA President Milton C. Toby writes, "Like many of you, my first job out of college was on the staff of a small, five-day-a-week newspaper. I covered local sports in Aiken, South Carolina, a job I got because I grew up with horses and Aiken was, and still is, an important training center for thoroughbreds. It was a wonderful introduction to journalism, and more than 40 years later, I'm still writing about horse racing. I had the usual worries shared with journalists everywhere: too much work and not enough time, tracking down sources, getting the facts correct, deadlines that always came too soon. Never once, though, did I worry about getting shot on the job or about my newsroom being turned into a war zone."

The tragic news out of the Capital Gazette Newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland, serves as a devastating reminder that journalism is difficult and dangerous work, performed in service to a greater good. Journalists risk their lives as they hold the powerful accountable and uncover the truth. So far in 2018, 29 journalists have been killed around the world, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Since 1992, 1,306 journalists have been killed, according to CPJ.

What, exactly, is press freedom, and why does it matter? In the popular discourse of the United States, we do not ask this question very often or very deeply. If we can liberate the idea of press freedom from assumptions that equate it with whatever journalists say publics need, then press freedom becomes a generative and expansive tool — a way to think about publics, self-governance and democracy.

It's not necessary that you provide pictures with your story, but if images are available, you should always mention (but not send) them with your query. Improving your photography skills or learning more about graphic design may not be directly related to being a better writer, but it could hold the key to becoming a more successful freelancer.
