ASJA
With WEAF, “our goal is to serve as a small safety net under our fellow writers who have an emergency need,” observes ASJA’s new vice-president Janine Latus, who also is WEAF’s new committee chair. “We can’t solve chronic problems, whether of health or career, but we can help each other out in a pinch.” Grants are available to both ASJA members and non-members, although non-members must have publishing credentials sufficient to qualify for any level of ASJA membership. Strong copyright stands shoulder-to-shoulder with freedom of expression. Ideas stolen equate to ideas suppressed, because many persons with good ideas would shrink from expressing them if they could not in some measure have their lives improved for doing so.
This is why the ASJA's 70th Anniversary Capital Campaign is so beneficial. It strengthens our bonds to free expression and to strong copyright. It builds up the apparatus for education, for mentoring, and for disseminating principles and skills that bolster vibrant free expression and dependable copyright. Have you contributed? Click here.

The murder of five employees of an Annapolis, Maryland newspaper by a reader nursing a years-long grudge over a story on his criminal conviction for harassing a woman was a horrifying, extreme example of a harsh reality editors everywhere face every day: Some people get really, really angry about the news and it’s a daily slog to defuse that rage and educate the public on the vital role of the press in a free society.

One of the first questions my editor at a national cruise magazine always asks is: “How are the pictures?” For him, good images are as important as a good story. In other words: No pictures, no sale.
Fortunately, I often have been able to take my own pictures to accompany my stories. Other times, I have known where to get the images I needed.

Should journalism, in short, take a lesson from activism?
