ASJA
We all know that part of the fun of every conference is exchanging ideas and interacting with faculty and colleagues. We also know that attending a virtual conference changes the ways we can network. Here are three ways to connect during ASJA’s first virtual conference:
- During sessions, take advantage of the chat sidebar in Zoom. Type questions and comments and connect with others in the session. The chat will be monitored by the moderator, so all questions will be asked of the speaker during live sessions and passed on to those speakers who are pre-recorded, as time permits.
- Ask questions before the sessions. Your emailed confirmation of the sessions will include a note about where to submit them.
- Use the free Snack Chats. These small groups focus on specific topics. Find one that interests you and sign up! The chats are available for anyone registered for the entire conference or for the track during which the snack chat is offered. You’ll have video and audio access to join the discussions, ask questions and make comments.
- Registering for a Snack Chat — If you’re registered for the full conference or a track, you’ll receive an email with instructions detailing how to sign up for a snack chat. Like the conference sessions, you’ll receive another email with a unique Zoom link for the snack chat.

As I leave my role as editor of the ASJA Weekly, I’m trying to help find my replacement. The job is simple — takes only about 1-3 hours a week — and offers the satisfaction of helping a great organization full of talented writers. If you’re interested in this volunteer position, email me at brenda@brendalange.com and I’ll tell you all about it.

The Crisis Coverage Awards: COVID-19 Edition has been a huge success, bringing in more than 500 entries. That means we need more judges! Can you volunteer for a few hours in the next few weeks to read some of the best writing about the coronavirus and the world's response to the pandemic? You can be part of this program's success. Sign up here.
ASJA runs on volunteers — thank you in advance for your time!

ASJA
ASJA is a strong organization, with energetic, successful members, but we've neglected our website. After a year of discussions and research, the board selected Think33, a web developer, to help us create a new site, which will launch sometime in 2021. Thanks in no small part to members’ contributions to the 70th anniversary campaign, this site will feature a robust educational hub, plus more intuitive tools for registering for programs and applying for membership as well as WEAF grants. Stay tuned for updates!

International Journalists' Network
Dr. Courtney C. Radasch, advocacy director for the Committee to Protect Journalists, recently shared an article she wrote about how the industry is responding to safety challenges posed by COVID-19 and the importance of safety protocols. It was published June 9 on the International Journalists’ Network website.
The Writer
Working at Borders was the best. The pay was terrible and the customers were occasionally strange or messy or angry. My co-workers were the difference. They made every day fun. The only common ground besides a place of employment was our love of books, music, and pop culture ephemera that the store possessed. It was summer camp for 30-year-old wise-asses who read deeply.

In a world where more and more work is conducted on a remote and distributed basis, and certainly where activity is globally distributed, the digital talent marketplace should be a place where part- and full-time freelancers, and clients and colleagues, commune.

Cultural change is reshaping both journalism and social-media platforms, as gatekeepers old and new confront their long-ignored blind spots. The concern over what Facebook has framed as a "free speech issue" is now impinging on company revenues.
