Power of Memoir in Spotlight at ASJA 2014
Randy Dotinga, ASJA President
Emma Brockes’ mother stood up against family abuse as a child in South Africa. Michael Hainey’s father died mysteriously, and a code of silence obscured the truth for decades. A hitman robbed David Berg’s brother of his life, leaving a legacy of guilt, fury and regret.
These tales are littered with secrets, shame and guilt. But as a rapt crowd learned last spring, heartbreak gave way to insight and even redemption in the hands of these three gifted storytellers.

8 Unexpected Lessons From Working with a Literary Agent
Writer's Digest
With self-publishing becoming more widely accepted and Amazon waging wars with publishers, more and more I get the sense from aspiring authors that they don't think landing an agent means as much as it used to. They believe "traditional" publishing is going the way of VCRs and none of the old rites of passage apply anymore. That's fine if you think that, but, in my experience, it simply isn't true.
Over 900 Authors Sign Open Letter to Amazon
Publishers Weekly
Authors United, the loosely knit group of authors who joined forces to formally ask Amazon to end its sales terms dispute with Hachette Books, is preparing to run a full-page ad in Sunday's New York Times. The ad, which includes the signatures of over 900 marquee, midlist and debut authors, requests the e-tailer to, among other things, stop its program of "selective retaliation" against the authors.
A Publisher of One's Own
Inside Higher Ed
Self-published books are on the rise, to the dismay of onlookers who wonder what to expect from a sector where E. L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey – originally published as online fan fiction by a tiny Australian e-book company – appears to be the best of the lot.
84 Percent of Publishers Plan to make eBooks in 2014
Good E-Reader
Publishers and self-publishers are having a love affair with eBooks. Ever since Amazon announced that digital editions were selling at a 3:1 ratio over print books, people took notice. A new report states that 84 percent of publishers will be making eBooks this year and 62 percent stated that eBook quality was the most paramount concern.
How Willingly Will You Shift From Reader to Writer With the Media?
The WRITER
An article published in The New York Times Aug. 1 focuses on "platforming," a growing practice among media outlets that allows readers to upload digital content such as "links, text, video and other media" to augment existing written content. Platforming, says the article, results in a " 'publish first' model in which a lightly filtered, or unfiltered, stream of material moves from reader to reader, with the publication acting as a host and directing conversation but not controlling it."

Check it out: “Thanks to The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Humphrey Carpenter, we can literally speak with the author of the world fantasy classic. Bridge The Gap In Women's Journalism By Bringing HerCampus to Your Campus
Forbes
Stephanie Kaplan always had a knack for journalism, but never thought she'd be the CEO of a business in the field. When Windsor Hanger Western began her freshman year at Harvard, she thought she'd follow college with law school. Annie Wang was entrepreneurial-minded from the start, having established her own make-believe paper-folding company as a child, but she opted to major in visual and environmental studies at Harvard.
