ASJA
Your chance to pitch Wine Enthusiast’s Jameson Fink
Virtual Pitch Slams (VPS) are one-hour interactive phone conference calls during which a moderator hosts a client, who outlines what his/her outlet is looking for from freelance writers. Then, ASJA members give live pitches by telephone, followed by constructive feedback on each story idea.
ASJA members can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Wednesday, August 30th at noon Eastern to get one of the pitching slots. The registration link will be posted HERE. Members may also register just to listen in on the event, as they would for a ShopTalk. VPS will also be recorded and accessible via ASJA's website shortly after the event.
Be sure to read the FAQs here for more information.

Volunteering in various capacities has helped me build friendships and business relationships that have paid off in numerous ways. I've gotten referrals to editors at consumer and trade magazines and each year I’ve attended the conference have earned back much more than what I spent in new assignments. I've also enjoyed a sense of camaraderie and support with fellow freelancers as we navigate the evolving publishing landscape.

In a time when Google and Facebook dominate web traffic and publishers are struggling to keep pace, page views have never been more important. But how can news organizations compete with the duopoly? Apparently by going back to basics.

"What could I have done better?"
This thought nagged me for a long time after I recently lost a client. Did I do something wrong? Could I have done better? I'm not someone who enjoys second guessing myself, so I made a vow after that relationship ended to start introducing performance reviews into my business.

Forbes
Close to 54 million Americans work as freelancers and they make 17 percent more an hour than full-time employees do. In other words, freelancers can make bank. Even so, it's still hard for freelancers to stay afloat.
In some cases, it’s because they work fewer hours than their 9-to-5 counterparts. Fewer hours means less money, even if they make more per hour.
