As if there isn’t enough to worry about these days, now this. “A recent court ruling in the Golden State could spell big trouble for your career as an independent writer, even if you've never stepped foot in California,” cautions Randy Dotinga, past ASJA president. “Last spring, the California Supreme Court essentially declared that if you treat someone like an employee — they work in your line of business, you're in charge of them — then they're an employee, not an independent contractor. And under California law, employees have certain rights and benefits” and are subject to government rules on minimum wage, overtime and rest breaks.

Do you seem to always know which editors and publications are taking pitches or looking for new writers? Or maybe you enjoy interacting with editors and helping your fellow writers find work? If so, consider joining the Virtual Client Communications team, which organizes 3-4 virtual events each year that connect writers with editors and agents over Skype or on the phone. We are currently in need of two types of volunteers. Some volunteers are needed to email out invitations (don’t worry, you don’t have to create this: a master invite will be provided that includes a sign-up link) to editors at websites, magazines, associations and content agencies, as well as to literary agents. Other volunteers are needed to help co-chair Kristine develop leads by researching markets and determining email addresses. Bonus (for both roles): you will have access to editors’ email addresses, for your own pitches! If you are interested, contact Kristine Hansen at kristinehansenwriter@gmail.com.

He had a choice. How many tweets did he want to delete?
Journalist Joel Mathis went the whole way last week. “I atom-bombed it,” said the Kansas-based freelancer, who contributes to The Week and Public Radio International.
Mathis knocked out all his old tweets just before another journalist, new New York Times editorial board member Sarah Jeong, saw her old tweets examined by the world.

The Writer
Once upon a time, fiction ruled the market. Today, however, nonfiction is just as heavily competitive – and memoir is a key corner of that genre. Consider some famous best-selling memoirs from the recent past: Joan Didion’s "The Year of Magical Thinking," Jeannette Walls’ "The Glass Castle," Elizabeth Gilbert’s "Eat, Pray, Love," and, most recently, J.D. Vance’s "Hillbilly Elegy."

Columbia Journalism Review
Many journalists are "sesquipedalians," and unapologetic at that. They foment the impression that eschewing bloviation is for dotards.
In other words, they like to use unusual words.
These are not the words that only journalists seem to use, like “acrimony,” “mull,” “spark,” “axed,” and “decry.” Nor are they the words journalists often parrot from sources, like “high rate of speed,” “end user,” “stakeholder,” or “bad actor.”

The Good Men Project
Many writers fail to realize that it is absolutely FREE to self-publish books on major websites like Amazon. They have never even heard about options like Print-On-Demand that make life so much easier. If you’re an author using On-Demand, you just sit back, relax and watch your book sales roll in. You don’t have to do anything! While you’re relaxing, factories in various countries are automatically assigned to print your books.
