ASJA
Starting with the October issue, the ASJA Magazine is getting a bit of a makeover. First up: frequency. ASJA Magazine will become a quarterly publication instead of a bimonthly. We’re also increasing the page count from 28 to 48 pages, providing more room for a deeper dive into topics that are important to you. Another exciting change: ASJA has dedicated a budget, and we’ll start paying features writers with the next issue! READ MORE at ASJA CONFIDENTIAL.

Comments: ASJA is one of the best investments for my career. As a writer from Hong Kong, building a business in the United States hasn’t been easy. Thanks to ASJA, plus many of the writers, editors and members involved, I’ve found more direction and passion in my work. Beyond new connections and gigs, I’m especially grateful to my mentors — Lynn Freehill-Maye and Kate Morgan — for sharing their pitching tips.

One of the easiest ways to determine your rates for freelance writing projects is to do research and see what’s already out there in the market. Be aware, however, that you’ll find a dramatic price range. You’ll find people who charge the bottom end of the spectrum and are comfortable making that amount of money, all the way up to the people who have a smaller client pool because of their expensive rates but still are able to find enough of it to book them full time.

Most journalists think they are good at dealing with stress. But they are not.
“Things like addiction problems, high anxiety, promiscuity and PTSD are pretty much ubiquitous,” says Anna Mortimer, a former Moscow correspondent for the Times of London, particularly when it comes to war correspondents.
Mortimer’s father, David Blundy, who was killed while on assignment for the Sunday Correspondent, a short-lived British newspaper, in El Salvador in 1989, belonged to a generation of journalists who dealt with occupational stress without seeking mental health care.

The Writer
In my volunteer work for a disaster relief agency, I go away for weeks at a time, and meet people who are experiencing the worst weeks of their lives. And when I get home, I am an essentially useless collection of self-regenerating cells. Ask my husband, who bears the brunt of this transformation from capable human to meat puppet. In the time it takes for me to get from airport to home, I become the neediest creature in his universe: I cannot fetch nourishment for myself. I can barely speak. Expecting me to be social or coherent is silliness.
