Want to learn more about how to market your work through podcasts, complete that dream project with grants and fellowships or expand your article into a book? Tips on these topics and more will be discussed by podcast hosts, award-winning authors and essayists, nonprofit leaders and top-flight editors and journalists at the ASJA Writers Conference in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 8.
The conference, held at Trinity Washington University and dubbed “A Capital Event,” also will feature a lively lunchtime panel discussion, “Inside the Pitch,” during which editors from Slate, Mother Jones and Vox will dissect pitches they didn’t accept in order to illustrate how to sell stories on an array of topics.
ASJA members also will get a chance to meet with industry representatives who want to hire freelance writers. Space is filling quickly. Register by Sept. 18 before rates increase.

More often than not, the news sucks. It’s depressing and disappointing (but hey, so is real life sometimes), and it’s clear that the negative Nellie Blys of the world help push away potential news consumers who can now easily scroll away from a scary headline or recoil from TV news airing in public.

A year and a half ago, some friends and I up and decided to start a writers’ conference.
Well, that’s the story we tell at bars, anyway. In April, we’ll embark on the third iteration of our writers’ weekend, called the Red House Writers’ Retreat. By all markers, it’s been a wonderful, wild, stressful ride, and we’re happy that it’s also been a successful one. Each retreat to date has filled to capacity, and every attendee has walked away happy.

A music writer's job is easily romanticized: Imagine getting paid to listen to music, that most universal, immediately resonant, and cool-conferring of art forms. Sure, modern writers spend just as much time clearing their inbox as they do panning for aural gold, but that’s a small price to pay for hearing new records ahead of time, and going to shows for free. Advance far enough, and they might even get to hang out with the artists themselves, hopefully in the pages of a ritzy publication.
