September 13 is your chance to pitch Wine Enthusiast’s Jameson Fink
Virtual Pitch Slams (VPS) are one-hour interactive phone conference calls during which a moderator hosts a client, who outlines what his/her outlet is looking for from freelance writers. Then, ASJA members give live pitches by telephone, followed by constructive feedback on each story idea.
ASJA members can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Wednesday, August 30th at noon Eastern to get one of the pitching slots. The registration link will be posted at NOON HERE. Members may also register just to listen in on the event, as they would for a Shop Talk. VPS will also be recorded and accessible via ASJA's website shortly after the event.
Be sure to read the FAQs here for more information.
Find out what Jameson Fink is looking for HERE.

Two things end on September 5, the day after Labor Day: summer and the early-bird registration rate for ASJA’s Content Connections conference, Nov. 18, and Spotlight on Ghostwriting conference, Nov. 17.
At Content Connections, Nov. 18, you’ll gain skills for better winning and managing content clients. At Spotlight on Ghostwriting, Nov. 17, you’ll get a roadmap for winning and managing lucrative nonfiction ghostwriting book projects.
It’ll be worth it at the regular rate. But wouldn’t you rather be an early bird and have your worm, and eat it, too?

Which is better — freelance or full-time employment? ASJA Confidential interviewed members Cheryl Alkon — who went from full-time to freelance — and Lisa Rowan, who took the opposite career path. Both weighed in on the pros and cons, offering an insider’s perspective. While some of us, including this editor, find the full-time employment environment as appealing as, say a pair of control-top panty hose, it definitely has its pluses. But the same can be said for freelance, except it's more like going commando and all the uncertainty that entails ... You decide!

Are you looking for new markets or want to pitch a long-form project? Fall is a great time to reboot your writing business. And the best part is that you don't have to leave your desk to make it happen! Sign-ups are rolling in from editors and agents for the next Virtual Client Connections event, which will be held Oct. 3-6 between noon and 4 p.m. EST. Pet360.com — publisher of PawCulture.com — and Care.com are two of the markets in need of writers, and meeting with ASJA members for this next VCC. Note that registration for the October VCC will be first-come, first-served, instead of a lottery. Be sure to read the VCC FAQS for detailed information on the event. The list of editors participating and detailed registration instructions will be posted on the VCC page in the next few weeks.
The first-come, first-served registration for the October VCC will open on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 2 pm Eastern and the link for the registration will be posted on the VCC website when it is live. Please note that you can only sign up for one editor the first 24 hours of registration. If an editor’s spots are filled up, Waiting List Only will be added to their name in the registration dropdown box. On Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 2 pm Eastern (after the registration has been open 24 hours to give all members a chance to sign up for one editor), members can sign up for additional appointments with editors that still have open appointments. Since you do not need a password to sign up through the Google Form, members who are unable to be online at this time can have a friend or family member sign up for them.
If you have any questions or concerns, email kristinehansenwriter@gmail.com.

Don’t make the same mistakes she did and ruin a steady gig
In a series of increasingly hostile emails, a copyeditor I’ve been working with for over a year fired me for paying late.
Except ... I paid her nine days early, and it’s all documented in black and white.
In my 36 years of freelancing, I’ve extracted payment from clients, paid subcontractors, and covered many facets of money management and cash flow for business publications. This newly-departed copyeditor made some errors common to many inexperienced freelancers. Here’s how to actually strengthen client relationships while navigating payment discussions.
(For more awesome advice on growing your practice as an editorial freelancer, check out these two November conferences sponsored by the American Society of Journalists & Authors. Spotlight on Ghostwriting, Nov. 17, is an intensive for published nonfiction authors who want to grow their practice as book ghostwriters, and Content Connections, Nov. 18, is all about getting more from content marketing clients.)

What are the implications of longevity and aging? Over four days, journalists will learn about financial literacy and security; fraud and scams; health care and healthy living; the desire or need to work longer; public policy; generational impacts; innovation and reinvention; and living beyond 100. You’ll also learn the latest data and research on aging topics.
This four-day program will be held Oct. 15-18 in Washington, D.C.
The all-expenses-paid fellowship covers airfare, ground transportation, hotel costs and most meals. NPF offers this professional development opportunity for journalists to enhance skills, increase knowledge and recharge their reporting on one of today’s most critical issues. This program is for U.S.-based journalists only. The deadline to apply is September 6, 2017.

Freelancers today are no longer TaskRabbiting for pennies. In fact, over 3.2 million of full-time freelancers in the U.S. fall into the high-earner category and bring in a steady paycheck each month.
But let’s face it, some months are still better than others. Freelancers of any qualifications and in any niche share the common enemy called “slow season.” And there is no way to paint slow business as a good thing. When work is slow, you obviously aren’t making the money you need. That’s a struggle.

When my husband walks in the door from a bike ride eager to talk, I look up from my computer screen and make eye contact. I’m trying to be polite, but truthfully, my brain is focused on what I was writing. Even so, when he finishes talking and I turn back to the screen, my train of thought has left the station.
Like many of us, prolific essayist and author Phillip Lopate has also had a family member sidetrack him while he was writing. When she was young, his daughter would regularly enter his home office, Lopate says.

On Monday, I watched the enthusiasm of the Internet bubble up and it made me think: What if newsrooms treated other days more like eclipse day?
Of course, not every day contains an astronomical event on the level of the moon’s shadow crossing the Earth's surface. And not every news event is like the eclipse or the Olympics or a presidential campaign, where newsrooms show off really innovative ideas because they can plan them in advance.

Ok, so I’m not actually trapped. I like it here. I’m just sorta baffled at how I actually happened. I’m sure there are more of us out there. But like me, they are probably talking. And talking. Or kayaking. Or running. Or hiking. Or swimming. Or doing something other than writing, until they’ve finally used up their verbal energy and are able to relax into their most favorite spot in this wonderfully noisy world — their own yappie head.

Regardless of the industry you have cemented your niche, most of us can agree on one overarching point: Freelancing is hard work! Unless you are fortunate enough to be working closely with an agent to represent you, or receive enough referrals to keep a steady stream of clients coming your way, majority of your time is spent finding new jobs and landing new clients. A well-crafted proposal for freelance work can help to propel you to the head of the pack of your competitors by providing you with an opportunity to showcase your professionalism.
